Welly receives new 'NEW' H7 Bulbs
I can haz a try of these 'ere new bulbs what is all the rage.
They come with a 2 year guarantee, not sure how that works but with permanent Headlampage I could be on to a winner.
They're made by Twenty20 (who?) and are set to take over the world of automotive bulbage. I might even be the first* person in the world to try them. They arrived in a lickle tubey-thing and had a cushioning foamy cover on the glass. I gave 14.87 gold coins for the pair and a post delivery operative brought them to me for no cost.
Obligatory action/comparison pics to follow......

Just an update, fitted these at the weekend and they're brilliant. I think the best I've tried (and there's been many).

Re: Welly receives new 'NEW' H7 Bulbs
As it's a fairly modern car and we all know how easy* it is to get to the bulbs, I'd imagine it took Welly so long because he was put off by having to start the changing of the bulbs process by removing the rear number plate, followed by the windscreen.

On the contrary the Volvo's headlamps pop out when you release the 'peg' at the back, only a 5 min job tops.
I've been waiting for my MOT to pass so I can do a little project on the headlights let's just say I can now see where I'm going at last

Noticed the blue band round the top of the bulb.
Does this mean the light is bluish ?

No they're not blue, that's a 'filter' kinda thing. I understand it creates a whiter light output.

I wonder if that's for the same reason they add a tiny bit of blue dye to washing powder, to make your whites whiter than white - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluing_%28fabric%29

Re: Welly receives new 'NEW' H7 Bulbs
It makes the light seem whiter by filtering out light that isn't blue-ish. Yes, this means you get less total light output from the same filament. To make up for this, hotter-burning and shorter lived filaments are used.
Now obviously those Twenty20 bulbs aren't nearly as bad as those completely blue-coated bulbs boy racers seem to love, but it's still completely unnecessary and counterproductive. Any kind of coating that changes the glass from 100% transparent to anything less, will degrade the total light output and quality.
You don't want whiter (actually bluer) light from your headlights, as it makes your pupils contract more, leading to effectively worse vision at night. This makes them seem brighter, but your vision at night will actually be worse. This is closely related to why wankers drive around with their front fog lights on all the time, because they think "more light = better", when in fact the additional light right in front of the car actually worsens the overall vision farther ahead, where you actually need it.
Good old-fashioned non-coated halogen bulbs actually have a pretty much ideal color temperature, HIDs are actually slightly worse (but make up for it with more total light output and sharper defined beams).
Just say no to blue-tinted bulbs, they're 100% marketing horse manure.

Yes, I am a curmudgeonly fuddy-duddy about these kinds of things, but for good reason :-) Optimal light in front of you without needlessly blinding oncoming motorists is absolutely essential for safety.
Personally, I've found the standard Osram H7 bulbs to be a very good match for the 406's headlights. If you find that you need brighter bulbs to effectively see at night, you might want to check your headlights for hazing or discoloration and/or check that your headlights are actually getting proper power. Alternatively, go see an eye doctor

Re: Welly receives new 'NEW' H7 Bulbs
Good point Kozmo, I have studied that website several times myself and I understand about the problem with foreground brightness (I wish some of the idiots with Fogs and/or HID kits would realise).
I've also witnessed a 'black hole' effect immediately after a car with Factory HID's passes you, this is your eyes adjusting but very dangerous sometimes.
I went for these bulbs to try and increase the overall light output from my poor Volvo projector lenses and although I guess the 'whiter' light in front of the car is not really an improvement on its own I have noticed the reflective road signs and markings are very much brighter and this is a good benefit for distance safety and early warnings.
Something often missed by night drivers is the fact that their Instrument Cluster lighting is often too bright and causes the pupils to close slightly, I run my dashboard lighting very low and this helps my forward vision greatly.

I had a MK1 Humber Sceptre some years ago. It had 'dippable' warning lamps, and you could turn the dash lamps off. It was brilliant for night driving. I have been toying with the idea of putting a switch next to the dash dimmer to turn them off.

Re: Welly receives new 'NEW' H7 Bulbs
One thing puzzles me.
All these 'brighter' 55W lamps produce the same amount of light as a standard H7, but distribute it differently, so more of it is concentrated in the centre of the beam, thus this bit's brighter and has longer range.
OK so far?
All very well with reflector headlights a la 406 saloon/estate, but what about projectors?
Don't projectors focus the light wherever it's meant to be pointed?
If so, why would they be better with these bulbs if the light output is the same as standard 55W lamps?
I'm going to lie down in the dark for a spell......
