Prestone screen wash...

Post by Bailes1992 »

Apparently this stuff works to -23°c neat and you can use it as deicer.
£5 for a 4L bottle which is handy as my screen wash tank holds ~4L once the low washer level light comes on.
It also boasts that it will repel rain off the windscreen.

Now I'm always picky with screen wash. I usually buy Tesco own branded concentrate and run it neat.
I do lots of motorway mileage so having good wipers and screen wash, especially this time of year I think is critical.

The car had brand new wipers fitted in May when I bought it, genuine ford wipers. They have done 10,000miles.
The wipers were still brilliant although the UV marker was telling me it's time to change them

So about a month ago I went to Tesco and thought I would try some of this all singing and dancing screen wash.

I drained off the old screen wash, run some fresh #0PPM water through it to flush it out and then added the prestone screen wash.

Instantly the wipers started smearing badly. It's like I have a greasy windscreen until it dries off leaving horrific dirty marks all over my windscreen.
I tried to live with it for 4 weeks hoping that maybe my screen would need to build up a few layers of the stuff to start working properly.
I tried cleaning the wiper blades with isopropanol alcohol & white vinegar but the wiper blades are w*anked!
It's getting worse and worse and yesterday I had to take the plunge, drop 3litres of screen wash, flush it all out and replace the now ruined windscreen wipers.
Effectively trying this screen wash cost me £45 to replace my wiper blades after destroying them!
I've also had to clay and machine polish the windscreen to remove the residue that this screen wash left behind, which I assume is supposed to give my windscreen 'rain repellant' properties.

So if anyone is thinking of trying it, avoid it at all costs!

I think all screen wash goes a bit smelly after a while. Once a year I drop the screen wash and fill it up with warm water and a dishwasher tablet. Let the tablet dissolve and spray the windscreen washers a bit to clean out the hoses. Leave it overnight, then drop it and rinse it out with #0PPM water. Abut of a farce but I do get a little OCD
