It must be 1/2" I'll measure it thanks.

I must sound a bit amateurish but believe it or not I am quite handy with the spanners if a little rusty (me not the...). I spent most of my early teens stripping down/building BMX bikes and then moved onto cars where I'd do my own servicing and brakes etc. Looking forward to getting back into it and saving on Garage fees.

I'm sure that, once you're squeezed under the car with oil dripping in your ear & a lump of rust in your eye, it'll all come back to you... :supafrisk:

To get properly back into it you need one of those moments when you turn your head and
smack your beak on the underside of the car,
causing you whack the back of your head on the ground.
repeat, until you get an eyeful of rust.

Then it'll all come back to you.

ha ha yes or what about the 'roly socket'?

This is where you reach for a socket (normally behind your head) but push it further away...it then becomes far away enough to almost dislocate your shoulder or crick your neck looking for it

This is going to be great :D

Both have tools inside........

( Sorry Welly/Dai/old people..... )

Funnily enough, since I have got rid of the 406, properly gutted, and now the proud* owner of a T4  I pop the bonnet to have a butchers at the mechanical parts and I'm absolutely clueless.
Both diesels, both turbo but so different to look at and to find what plugs into where etc - what is an N75 valve anyway..??

I fear I may have to resort to crawling underneath, getting rust in the eye, oil on the nose, dirt in the hair, lock jaw ( no idea why, it always happens.. ) and leaning on my keys, just to find where that slippery 10mm spanner landed.....

At least it has a decent handbrake.

Show us the T4 please :cheesy:

Anyhoo, my Oil Filter Cartridge Sockets turned up yesterday and I was looking at the square-drive bit with some confusion....it measured at 9.5mm....back at home my 1/2" drive was too big so I tried my 'mini' socket....that fitted and transpired it was a 3/8" set I had :?

HOW MUCH smaller does a 3/8 drive look than a 1/2 :o

Torque Wrench turning up today and that has a 1/2 to 3/8 adaptor socket 8)

Ollie - I is well jell of yer tool box solutions. From a safety point of view i think it would benefit from park-distance sensors and ABS castors. Perhaps some out-riggers would prevent nuisance toppling hazards.

I does haz a desk-top tool cabinet with all me torx/allens/sockets in the garage which gets a surprising amount of use.

I'm starting to like this idea of doing my own jobs (oh wait yeah it's almost summer and crawling about outside seems ok) but seriously I've 'only' spent a further £85.00 this month to add essential toolage for being able to service a car safely and easier but the kit stays with me obvs.

I shall be able to 'fully' service the Twingo for £66.00 (oil, filter, sparks, air and pollen filters).

The Shitrun should be £39.00 (oil & filter).

The Volvo should be £70.00 (oil & filter).

Err, 1/8"? What's that in modern, about 3mm? Not a lot I guess.

Speaking of all things metrick, I'm thinking of getting one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/METRIC-TIME-W ... Sw5ZBWPNkl

It has brakes on the non swivel casters, it's a lever that pivots about the axle shaft. Probably still not safe enough for a volvo driver

I'll line up a 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2" drive ratchets and take a piccy at some point this weekend

My home tool kit is much more modest (and portable), although I did spring for some shiny new facom sealed pear head ratchets after destroying the previous cheap 1/2 in drive jobbie.

I probably couldn't afford to run 2 cars if I didn't do the servicing/repairs myself. Oil and filters for both cars 2l of gearbox oil for her 307 and set of wipers for mine came to a grand total of £65. You wouldn't be able to get the oil and filter done on one car for under £100 around here.

I bought one of those tool cabinets a few years ago and wish I had done it many years ago, jobs take about half the time now because I can find everything.

We are doing our annual trip to the far north of Scotland in June but I have to change the cambelt first, done quite a few of those now. I have been repairing my own cars since I started driving in 1955, how much longer I will be able to do it I don't know but I shall keep trying.
