Short journey syndrome?

What a bastard though :frown: why don't you just leave it like it is (if it seems ok otherwise)? :|

That is one option, yes, I know it'll cook the cat but I don't really have to worry about it until the MOT (or local equivalent...) next August, so plenty of time to source cat & lambdas at something less than the ludicrous prices Toyota here want to charge me.

At the moment though I'm hoping to get some better diagnostics done because maybe it's something easy that could be fixed for not very much cash at all. After all, I can't just assume it's the same crap that's gone wrong again. Unfortunately this won't happen until Monday so I'll be breaking the Pug out again, something I didn't want to do just now what with colder weather forecast including the possibility of snow :( Damn, damn, damn. Ah well, cars are meant to be driven :|

Don't s'pose there's any hope of getting your own diagnostic setup, is there?

If I wanted it hooked up to a generic diagnostic machine I could have it done right now, but I doubt it'd tell me anything useful. I'm after something a bit like PP for Toyota and I don't suppose that'd be cheap. The people I'm going to see come highly recommended, I don't know what they have but apparently diagnostic is all they do.

I've just realised, it was about a year ago when I bought it, all this emissions stuff was last February/March, so that means it only lasted 8 months. I don't suppose I'd be able to get a refund/replacement off World Car Parts (where I got the sensors) - "bring it into the shop mate." but the guy I spoke to before seemed pretty clued up so it must be worth a call, as did the guy who restuffed the cat and gave me a year's guarantee  Err, no receipt but I'll bet he remembers me

This'll have to wait 'til I have some diagnostics done and I've (hopefully) got a better idea what's going on.

Meanwhile, I've stuck the winter tyres back on the Pug (on Jamjar's old Corails :cheesy: ) and I'm enjoying soft suspension, a gearbox that doesn't argue, comfy heated chairs, auto wipers etc- etc. etc. I'll tell you what though, I'm really noticing how much I have to squeeze myself into it :(

You can afford to take longer getting in & out, you'll make up the difference easily.

Besides, there's more room in the boot for logs etc, to build a pyre, if you decide on a more drastic cure for the Toilet.

I'm sure it would be quite capable of burning itself out without the need for further accellerants...

I had a phone call.... Seems the guy had time for a look today, so that's where it is. They guy has some hand-held jobbie dedicated for Japanese cars, I couldn't tell you the make 'cos I'd left my glasses at home  I couldn't see the display too well either, just enough to know the blobs were changing shape constantly. His English isn''t so good and I had to go through Goran, so it's a bit like Chinese whispers plus I don't like saying "whuh??" too often. The general points seem to be:
  • When the car arrived the emissions system was completely deactivated and the engine management was chucking fuel through it like it's free.
  • When we changed the lamdas and cat back in March we should have reset the whole system: clearing codes with a generic code reader or disconnecting the battery for a few hours doesn't do the job.
  • It went tits up this time because the ecu was still trying to work to the original settings and threw a strop.
He then reset the ecu and the emissions system sprang to life with all measurements well within tolerances. Cool.

He reckons the 54km I drove it since the fault light came up ( ) probably didn't do any damage but no guarantees. He also knew all about the overfueling issue with these and said he should be able to reprogram the ecu to stop it happening, so I've left the car with him to chalk up a few miles to see if the lights of doom reappear and have a fiddle.

Btw he also said that lots of short journeys is almost as bad for modern petrols as it is for diesels :( :(

Afterwards he took us to a workshop out the back where, under a cover, was an immaculate Yugo Zastava. Ok, and? He then opened up the bonnet to reveal the engine & transmission from a Fiat Uno turbo. It's bog standard from the outside apart from some not too wide alloys, who'd have thought it? Modified suspension, disks all round, he says it red lines in every gear and tops out at 230kph. The only time I was in a Zastava it didn't even feel safe at 30kph...

Sounds like good news there, steve. Hope that's it sorted and it stays that way.

This guy seems to know what he's talking about, too.

I hope so, my only concerns are he wouldn't talk to me even when I tried talking to him in Croatian (some people are like that I guess  ) and he reset both my trip meters (it has 2 - the one I use for fuel consumption calculations and the one I set when I bought the car, which said a massive 9000-odd kms when I checked it a couple of days ago) I'm not sure why he did that :frown: Still, if it comes back without the lights I don't really care what he does with it.

Oh, and the exhaust is blowing on the Pug :( I think from the flexi 'cos we were a bit careless with it when we had the tank out to change the fuel pump. It's not too loud so far so it'll keep.

Also, I forgot to put it away last night after we came back from shopping and I just woke up to snow. Sorry Pug

I changed the flexi on my last one by getting someone to weld in a repair section from the factors. The original was only leaking ever so slightly, the outer braiding had nearly separated from the cat housing and there was a fair bit of soot in this area, making me think failure was imminent. When we cut it off, the central spiral wound flexible seemed intact as was the inner braid.

The origial was much sturdier than the replacement too. :(

Hopefully this non-speaking ECU chappy will sort it then! over-fuelling is no joke so whatever he does to fix it will probably get you your money back in fuel savings. Thinking about it; the 2002 Ravvy we had at work used to get through a fair bit of petrol

That Yugo sounds a bit rough and ready

We live in hope... Not sure about the consumption, what I've been getting from it isn't as bad as I'd expected, something like 8.5 to 9 litres (low 30s mpg), and that's with all the transmission drag of permanent 4wd and the aerodynamics of a breeze block. Still, any improvement would be welcome.

Rough and ready? I should have taken a pic, it was just done with minimum fuss - no chrome, no gaudy paint scheme, no stickers, no razzmatazz - just a clean engine that looked like it belonged there. As I said, the car looked clean but bog standard, just with some alloys that certainly didn't look over the top. I asked (through Goran) if he knew about that Yugo down on the coast with Lancia Delta HF running gear in it (turns out Goran actually knows the guy who built it  ) and he said the trouble with that one is it has a body kit on it to fit round the wheels etc. while his just looks like a standard car. I said he should've painted it with rattle cans...
