I'm, err...

I've no idea what I'm doing!
I suspect if it wasn't for the better climate, water and food here I'd be even more of a mess.
And I have seen myself filmed before, I didn't walk about though, just shout my head off - I was on the news protesting with F4J years ago.

Are you behind a work firewall perchance?
Cheers, although I'm just glad it's got a roof on it again!
And guess who turned up after lunch?

Almost done...
Seeing as how the promised rain didn't show up, Miloš came out to play. It only started looking like rain and maybe a thunderstorm around 7 and he'd done enough by then to make the roof rainproof. No heavy lifting for me this time, just passing the odd tool or plank up, so no real stress on my knee. Which, btw, is not painful at all, just doesn't have full movement. I spent most of the afternoon playing the string game with 7of6 waiting to be useful.

Well yeah, you know, bad back, bad shoulder, bad leg, bad knee... My main problem has always been poor self-image but thankfully I seem to be getting to an age where I'm starting to think "Who gives a frick?" No way would you have seen a film of me 10 years ago...

Steve,
That's not a next generation thing is it ?
We had a cat called seven (of nine)
If so what are the chances

Re: and today i have mostly been...
Sort of, 7 was my wife's idea for a temporary name as we had 7 cats at that point, so I was kind of thinking 7 of 9, but then Billie died so we only had six, so she's 7 of 6. Seven of Nine was in Voyager btw, played by the rather top-heavy Jeri Ryan.

Re: and today i have mostly been...
What, you mean there's another way of doing it?
I've also been watching a house being built on the way to Max's, at one point I saw all 5 roofers standing in a circle on the ridge having a chat. All it needed was a bar and a glass in each hand...

Re: and today i have mostly been...
Just a by-the-by, bumped into Pedro, my old D9's new owner earlier, still going strong after a few teething troubles with the HP pump (lack of use + crap diesel here) and since then he's added another 30,000lm to it. Still loves it but thinking about replacing it with a 508 next year.
As you were.

Re: and today i have mostly been...
As it's quiet and there's nowt of interest on the telly.... I thought I'd take the original door on the shed apart.
This one

Like all the door here it's rebated, I've no idea what else to call it. The edges and top of the door look like this

and, when you shut the door, one half of it goes in the frame, one half stays outside, pressing against the door frame. They have this both sides and the top.
Except this door, which has them both sides and bottom. Yes, it's spent the last 57 years (presumably) hanging upside-down. Class. Also, the bottom overlaps the step, which is flush with the frame, so in order to shut the door it needs to flex. It's kind of that shape now anyway, plus it's collapsed. Miloš says there's no point in fixing it, easier to build a new one, but I reckon I can make it usable, maybe not pretty, but then it'll suit the rest of the shed.
Taking it apart the construction is a bit surprising. Each slat is like a strip of T & G, only they didn't have any T so it's got strips of wood joining the G's together, along with 3 15mm dowels.

Most of the slats seem to have nails holding them in.
There are also 2 cross beams (I am making the terminology up), the hinges are screwed to these through the slats. These cross beams are actually dovetailed, the slats seem to slide onto them 1 at a time. Or the slats are put together and then the beam is hammered in, don't know.

The slats are nailed to the cross beams, as these are completely sproinked I decided the best way to dismantle it would be to drill through, find the points of the nails, and hammer them back out.

II've managed to find some 16mm dowel, plus a 16mm drill bit (metal but only 3 quid) so I can replace the dowels. I think I'll get it flat on my tressels and see what a sander does to it. 'll have o replace the cross wotsits but I think I can do that on the saw bench (easier than the slot on the slats anyway), plus It'll need the leading edge replacing as there's a big chunk out of it, and the top and the bottom are rather chewed, although it was too long anyway as it was hitting the step. As for the width, I can probably make that whatever I want as I can stretch it out with wider strips.
Oh, it's not oak, like I was expecting (hence dismantling in situ), no idea what though. And yes, I did stick my head on that spike, had to happen eventually

Re: and today i have mostly been...
Carpentry confuses me, it never seems to go how you'd expect it too, like when I tried to make a square box and none of the corners worked (something about adding 2 x thicknesses to the length) that got botched in the end.
I can just about hang a door but as long as it's replacing like for like and I can copy the old one.

I really wish I was good with wood but I have to confess I'm pretty crap. Plans in your head all seem to go awry, maybe it's these hands
I will have a crack at this door though, for a few reasons

I will have a crack at this door though, for a few reasons
- It'll be interesting
- I'll probably learn something new
- I've got stacks of wood sitting about to play with
- As far as everyone else is concerned it's only good for firewood, so if I cock it up it'll still burn just as well.
