Always phone them up in advance of buying your modifications. The change in your insurance policy costs may well put you off spending the money on the mod in the first place. Let them know you're thinking about adding X to your car, because Y.

Like Dai, I phoned up my insurer (Admiral for this year and last) and asked about adding a stainless exhaust to the Coupe, because the old exhaust was rotten and a stainless unit will not rust, and will actually cost a lot less than an equivalent system from Peugeot (£420 from Pug for mild steel, £360 from Powerflow for stainless)

They told me straight away what it would do to the cost of my policy, and I decided that it was still worth it. I booked the appointment for the fitting, then called Admiral straight away and asked them to make that change dated from the day of my appointment. On the day of my appointment, I had a letter through my door from Admiral with a revised motor insurance policy document showing the modification as "exhaust/manifold - 3rd party". I take this to mean that I could have replaced the manifold with a stainless unit as well and this is still covered - but there's probably not much to gain by replacing the exhaust manifold with a stainless system.

Same when I got my wheels - before I bought them, I phoned them up and asked them what it would do to my policy. They told me, and so I bought them, and when they were delivered, I phoned them up and told them when they were going on to the car. No problems.

I haven't had any issue with Admiral; they have been good to me so far.

The fuckers that pissed me about with the old 406 saloon were Direct Line. Named and shamed
2002 (D9) Peugeot 406 Coupe SE, 2.2 litre Petrol. Scarlet Red/Rouge Ecarlate/Rosso Scarlatto. Black Leather interior. SOLD :(
2008 (E60 LCI) BMW 525i M-Sport, 3.0 litre Petrol. Carbonschwarz Metallic. Black Dakota Leather and Myrtlewood interior.

I've changed from Direct Line to Admiral

Seemed very good on the changes, although had to laugh

They didn't seem too bothered about the wheels, or the zorst - I too told them yes it did increase performance, but was fitted as it was cheaper than the standard exhaust
However, they said the strut brace was a big no no - I said it wasn't fitted for performance, but for safety, as the 406 oversteers quite a bit, especially in the wet, and with it fitted, it cured it, and as such was a lot safer with it, but they'd have none of it, as they said it screamed performance - go figure

I know that when I do change the car, i'm going to try and have a car as spec'd up as poss

Truth be told, I still hanker after a 407 SW XS, which has the 2.2hdi 170bhp engine, 18"wheels, rear spoiler, twin exit zorst, and front bumper extensions, and chrome grill
I put one through a price comparison site, and was 2/3rds the price to insure that my 406 currently is
A cheeky remap and I reckon i'd be well happy 8)
1999 D8.5 HDi GLX - Sold :(

2007 Mondingo Zetec - I seek forgiveness :( Bring back my 406

Strangely enough, the Volvo is fully specced up being an ex demonstrator, it's top of the range with around 6-7 grand of optional extras I reckon. When I rang the insurance to change over from the Pug, they asked if it was modified, I said "no, but it's got every factory optional extra in the book", she said, "yeah, that's fine as long as you haven't changed anything".

My Volvo was a Demonstrator but was spec'd-down :frown: I've no heated seats, no sat-nav, no rear blind, no 'folders'..... :(

Stupid thing is the 'Winter Pack' which adds Heated Seats, Headlamp Washers and Carpet Mats was 'only' £375.00

I was just wondering what would happen if insurance companies were suddenly swamped with people ringing up to tell them about nit picking "enhancements" - air fresheners, nodding dogs, GB stickers, rubber mats... :frown:

No, but it was only £53 extra and I only started it in June, so that's pretty much the whole year, and I assume that includes an admin fee. 8)

....then they charged me £60 insure the Pug on a temporary cover note for a month!

It'll be a game of Volvo Top-Trumps before the day's out

Insurance wise the 406 does seem to be loaded on the premiums for no clear reason - Bailes proved this with saving a shed load on his new Mondy :?

BEWARE - some insurers have been found to charge people MORE for "third-party only" cover than they do for "fully comp"

The reason being that poor people buy a sh*t run-down car that they reckon will be cheap to insure - then because the car isn't worth much, they put up their voluntary excess or they pick "third party only" because that's the minimum level of cover you need. They're not even going to check how much fully-comp is. People reckon that's been going on for years, but because nobody checks how much more their insurance would be on their clapped out jalope the insurers don't get caught and poorer folk have been coughing up more than they should have.

These twats make me sick with some of the sh*t they pull.
