I do believe there's an "EV Mode" which will allow it to run in electric mode without startiing the engine, but it's only really designed for moving it short distances...

No, it just says "PRIUS", which must be latin for "TWAT". You'd have to be to want to own one.
I have to agree!!

I bet there's loads of Diesels out there which've had Petrol through them and then part-ex'd sharpish..........poor new owner eh?

I don't like Prius's I don't believe they are that economical overall and the way they are manufactured/sourced is shocking.

I've been saying this for years, in fact it's part of my Environmental Awareness course to emphasise full Life Cycle impacts rather than just the impacts at the point of use. It's also an argument that I like to throw at my old man every time he gets all self-righteous about his Pious  . Last night's conversation was fun about how much better for the environment my Vulva will be than his Pious is  . Still I can't complain too much 'cos he's using it to take me to pick the Vulva up on Saturday!! :P  :P

The Prius is actually pretty nippy. The extra torque from the electric motors will pull you along quite well.
Still rather a decent diesel engine though

Yes, they don't tend to tell you how long a set of batteries lasts, or how much they cost..........

When I had a Prius as a loan car, the best I could average was 45 mpg. Not bad for a petrol I grant you. But terrible by modern diesel standards. Even my old 250k miles 406 would do the mid 50s mpg. SO, once you fill the thing with these special batteries full of nasty metals, just what is the point of them?
If you want good mpg, get a decent modern diesel? It'll be better to drive to.

I had a 2008 BMW 318i touring (2.0 petrol) company car the other day - drove 220 miles up the motorway and back and it averaged 43mpg. I was pretty impressed with that for a petrol.

I think it was mostly down to the Stop/Start tech and a 6-speed box.

I wonder about this stop start stuff. How much fuel does a modern engine use at tickover? Minimal I think. And how long till there all after new starters or batteries? I think the better engine management and higher gears are more to do with it. It's not the number of gears that matter, it's the top gear ratio that matters.

Can the stop/start gubbins be turned off?

Driving one with a dodgy starter motor might get a bit hairy sitting at a busy junction.

It will be interesting to see how long the technology lasts when these 'eco' cars are being scrapped after 5 or 6 years as 'uneconomical to repair'.

Why don't they work on better bio-diesel mixes, buy back schemes on wvo along with growing crops purely for bio production is surely a more sensible solution. Won't be long until the majority of derv vehicles are averaging 60/70+ mpg which should extend the time we have left on fossil fuels.
Surely that would be the best way until decent alternative fuelled cars come on line?

My 5-cylinder 2.5 petrol averaged 40mpg on a London run last saturday (approx 80mph) and 36 on the way back (approx 95 mph) I was very pleased about it - it's still showing 30mpg now a week later :|
