I think it depends on the area. I have heard that some Police forces look at the situation EG: SP30 and then give the speeder a choice of taking the course or handing in their license for points.

I touch wood that I haven't had any points on my license, but those horrible average speed cameras that are popping up keep getting me worried sometimes when I'm on the M1 or around Nottingham.

Just as an extra precaution I have got these fitted incase a nasty Gatso gets flashy. The plates have to be kept clean and whenever I have tested them (obviously off road), they do work :cheesy:

1. They don't work - Mythbusters did an episode on number plate obfuscation and found that they did very little (although they only tested in the daylight)

2. They're only supposed to work on GATSOs - the chances of being caught by a GATSO are dropping with scamera vans hidden everywhere and more SPECS/Truvelo cameras appearing

3. They're illegal.

What if your being followed at night by the old bill and they look at your car reg through some built in camera and can't see your plate?

Don't know if this would happen but I did see on Road Wars two coppers pulled this guy because when viewing his plates through their camera there was no visable reg! obviously he had something like this or similar...

I'm with MJB on this.

The simplest way to avoid getting caught speeding is simply not to do it! Period

I may drive 80 to 90 on the Motroways when they're clear enough (ocassionally 100 to clean the engine out for a few minutes) but I stick to the rules in 20, 30 zones and 40 zones. Why? Because 9 times out of 10 they're in areas where people may step out into the road... or children are playing. I especialy take great care in 20 zones as up here they're all in spots where there are schools or general playing areas for kids.

I have no sympathy for idiots that speed in such zones. They deserve to get their vehicles and licences confiscated to be taught a lesson.

Companies that sell the kinda sh*t maglite linked to should be prosecuted for obstruction of the law.

I agree, I shouldn't speed. But that particular 40mph zone was a dual carriageway with hardly anyone around. Stupid really. And last time I got caught was doing 90 on a motorway... And everyone does 90 on the motorway.... (and yes, I'd jump off the bridge if everyone else was doing it :P)

At least you're man enough to admit it.

Yup I cruise at 80mph 90% of the time on motorways. Coppers tend to leave you alone at that speed. They more inclined to target the idiots chopping and changing lanes at short notice and neds who race their little 106s and Corsas at speeds they weren't designed at.

Yeah about 3 years ago, I saw that too. It was a guy they stopped with a mk3 Golf in a Petrol station. I bought a set of cheapo high reflective plates from some guy selling them at the 05 motorshow at the NEC. When tested, they came up during the day. I tested them with my camcorder in night mode and they didn't show up, that's what got me worried.
But the ones that I've got now I can confirm they are a lot better and show up under infrared light even at night. I would never go around speeding intentionally. The only reason I have the camera shy plates is incase I'm somewhere new and miss a Gatso at 36 mph and then get 3 points and a fine for that. I know a couple of friends who have been cought speeding on the M40 by Mr Plod and his laser gun. They have both now installed one these out of the worry of it happening again. In my opinion they should just not speed. But unfortunatly a vast majority do speed and that's why these products are on the market.

In Sweden they are testing this new system where road signs send out radio info on what the speed limit is. Your car then only allows you to go to that limit within that zone. Another sign sends out a signal when you leave the zone and your car returns back to normal. I saw this on Discovery about 1 month back. I think something like that would be useful around schools and populated areas where safety is a major concern, but I have a feeling it wouldn't come into action.

Fools. You can't possibly expect to react to a beep and drop umpteen mph in the split second it takes you to be done by a laser gun. Even if the detector were wired into the braking system it wouldn't be quick enough

You know what really pisses me off? All these twats who are so used to speeding that they jump on the brake pedal every time they see a van parked in a layby, even when they weren't speeding in the first place. That show's great awareness doesn't it? Seen several near pile ups 'cos of that. Idiots!

And these clowns who drop the anchor 'cos their road angel beeps, even when all it's detected is a set of temporary traffic lights.

They should do these wankers for driving without due care and attention.

Set APPROPRIATE speed limits and then ENFORCE them and the speeding problem would go away, oh hang on, there's no revenue in that is there? Silly me!

Bluey, you should tell that to the stupid young twats that drive flat out up the narrow terraced street near my work when the kids are coming home from school.

I drive like a real saint in 20/30/40/50/60 zones. I'd like to be in the situation that (god forbid) if there was ever an accident involving a pedestrian in a 20/30 zone they would say ''well this fella was obviously not speeding at the time''. You can't say fairer than that.

Plus I'm in my mid thirties now and have realised that inappropriate speed is really stupid for a whole lot of reasons.

Done that... :( Quite often I'll drive at an appropriate speed and actually look at the road instead of the speedo. That's the problem with the scamera vans; they're out to make money not to make the roads safe, otherwise they'd be plainly visible with lots of temporary signs around.

What's worse? 3 points on your license or a car hitting you from behind? I'll take the shunt thanks!

Granted, but if I'm doing 65 on the cruise control on the motorway I really don't appreciate some fukwit slamming the anchors on causing me to brake hard and risk a rear end shunt just because he's driving along with his head up his arse. That's what causes pile ups

Ah motorway's a different story. If you can see the van, you're too late anyway... Nah I was on about the f**kers who hide in bushes on stretches of straight deserted 30mph roads with 5 yards of grass between the road and the pavement... You know, the kind of road that's perfectly safe to do >30 on...
