New Mot Rules for 2014

Post by rapport25 »

From 2014 all cars will be checked to make sure there dpf's if fitted function correctly. If not it's a fail. So if you have removed yours/ had it mapped out. It will need be fitted to pass the Mot next year.

Personally, I think as long as the canister remains, everything will be fine. The only way to prove it's not there would be to disassemble the exhaust system, which is not going to happen in an MOT.

Tests for diesel cars and lorries are to be tightened Roads Minister Robert Goodwill has announced.Garages will be required to check for a diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the inspection of the exhaust system as part of the MOT test from February 2014. The vehicle will automatically fail the MOT test if the filter had been fitted as standard but is found to be no longer present. The filter works by trapping solid particulate matter from exhaust gases. This type of filter has been in use for more than 20 years and helps meet European emission standards, improving air quality and health standards. It will become an offence to drive a vehicle with the filter removed as it will no longer meet the emissions standards the car achieved when it was approved for sale in the UK.Roads Minister Robert Goodwill said:“I am very concerned that vehicles are being modified in a way that is clearly detrimental to people’s health and undoes the hard work car manufacturers have taken to improve emissions standards. It has become apparent the government had to intervene to clarify the position on particulate filter removal given the unacceptable negative impact on air quality.“This change to the MOT tests makes it clear – if you have this filter removed from your car it will fail the test.”The filters need to be ‘regenerated’ regularly through burning the soot to gas at a very high temperature, leaving behind a residue. If not carried out properly, regeneration can lead to a build up of soot, which can affect performance. This has led to some diesel vehicle owners opting to remove the filter.- See more at: DPF test will be added to MOT from February - Garage Wire DPF test will be added to MOT from February

On the gov website it states " it is an offence to drive a vehicle that has been modified this way".

Moving the goalposts.

I wish they'd give it a rest micro-managing the daily existence of the silly buggers who work and pay taxes. More cuts for the Ministry of Transport (or whatever it's called now) please. All this environment stuff is bollocks anyway.

How are they going to prove it works? If it's all plugged in and visible they won't know if it's been gutted and disabled!

They don't have to prove it works, just that it's there and appears to be doing what the manufacturer intended it to do when it rolled out of the shiny factory......it's all bo**lcks really!

The V6 guys have been removing the elements from their cats for years, and none of them fail the MOT. This is exactly the same. I think they're just bringing the FAP regulations in line with the cat ones.

As long as it passes the emissions test and there's a visual check that the FAP is there, I reckon this is all that will be required.

The 406 2.2 HDi must have been approved for sale in the UK in late 2000, when the first examples were registered. DPF's became necessary to meet the Euro IV emission standard, which was introduced in 2004, i.e. after our cars were built.

PSA committed the same idiotic mistake as GM did in 1989, when they started fitting cats to top of the range cars, despite there being no requirement to do so until 1992.

In the real world, I agree that if the cat/dpf housing is still there, it's going to pass.

Whilst I agree, the guidance document states:
A missing DPF, where one was fitted when the vehicle was built, will result in an MoT failure.

if i had a 2.2 with a dpf as long as the canister is there i wouldn't worry it will be a visually check only.

Most of us have been cutting out the cat cans Jon and fitting straight pipes in their place, like these on the right:

I had this set up but have recently changed it by drilling out my original cats and re-welding the empty cans back on, as you may have seen over in the other place..... :supafrisk:

Interesting - what prompted you to switch back to the empty cans setup Mark?
