nissan micra spark plug leads

Post by marco2002 »

hi All

Just bought a nissan micra for work recently. So far so good. Just done a mini service the other day changed the spark plugs and air filter. About to do an oil change tommorow if it ever stops raining. I checked the spark plug leads with a meter and measured the resistance they all seem to range from 2.12 kohms to 3.60kohms as follows:

plug lead 1 = 2.12 kohms
plug lead 2 = 2.29 kohms
plug lead 3 = 3.42 kohms
plug lead 4 = 3.60 kohms

Its a long time since i've had a petrol car am i right in thinking that the lower the resistance the better with the plug leads? Plug lead 1 is the longest and no 4 is the shortest. Haynes book says plug lead resistance should be from 4.48 kohms to 6.72 kohms per metre. Any help appreciated

Thanks

Do you have a problem with the running of the engine?

Why are you worried about the plug lead resistance?

Best thing to do with the Micra regarding plug leads is to get a plastic bag and fit it all round the distributor cap and seal it up as they suffer problems with damp getting on the leads at the cap end.

I have been a Nissan specialist since 1974.

Thanks Jasper
Sounds a bit like the same sort of problem with the distributor cap on the mini. I'll give that a go with a plastic bag as theres a lot of water on the roads round these parts. The car runs fine just thought i'd give it a service as the parts are pretty cheap and it looks like we are going to have a cold winter. Bought some engine oil for it and there seems to be 2 choices 5w30 semi-synth or 5w30 fully synth. Went with the semi-synth. I've had 2 micra's before a long time ago and they both proved to be good cars. Hoping this one will be the same. I do miss the 406 but its someone elses problem now.
Thanks

Semi synthetic for the older model, fully synthetic for the newer ones, yours is a pre-2000 I assume as they changed to individual ignition coils on the 2000 onward.

You have a cable clutch on yours, check for clearance on the gearbox end when you are servicing.

Also have a good look at your sills under the back door if 5 door and behind the driver's door if 3 door, also make sure there is no rot under the radiator along the lower panel.)

Micras are dead cheap and easy to maintain, but if you need any help just ask, I know all the faults and how to fix them.

Hi Jasper

This micra i bought isn't too bad it had a bit of welding done on it a while ago behind the back seat. I just cleaned a lot of surface rust on the back end and used rust killer and gave it a coat of chasis black then some underseal.

Averages 40mpg which is all stop start driving was expecting a bit more to be honest from what i remember of the first micra's k10 they seemed to run on air. There is a bit of jerkiness at slow speeds accelerating when you get past 40mph its not too bad. The panel under the radiator looks a bit rusty so i'll have to clean it up and rust treat it before it gets worse. I went with the 5w30 semi-synth oil which is what you said. If theres anything else i can think of i'll post on this thread again.
Thanks
Marco
