What's needed to get more power from a 110 HDI?

Post by YJ53CGA »

The family wagon is a 2004 2.0 TDCI Mondeo ghia estate 130bhp which I'm now selling and I'm going to replace it with a 406 estate when I find the one I want, and I'm going to miss the power of the Mondeo so this is why I'm asking. I'm leaning more towards the 2.0 110 unit more than the 2.2, So if I go down the 110 path what can I do and what's the cost of getting the bhp up to 130/140 mark? I was told last year that you can get these up to 170 but I'm thinking that's the 2.2 unit and not the 2.0!

Plod's (currently being broken) was remapped to 140. If you can get a suitable map file then you can even remap yourself using KWP2000 cables via the OBD socket. Doggy is the resident expert on this, although with the 2.2. (For remapping, avoid the 90 with the Siemens system.)

The 2.2 is a completely different animal, and when remapped to 180 is truly amazing.

Bailes swapped his HDi 90 for a Modeo, and Plod is getting one too. Why are you going in the other direction?!

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

I used to have for my own run around a pop light 1.8 long nose MX5 and then last year we found out that we would be having a small person joining the family so with baby in mind I sold it ( I thought it might be a tad tight to get a baby seat in the back). Now I've had my 110 HDI which is my work car for some time now and even with the miles that its done it's still a really nice drive but I thought I would try somthing different so I went for a 2001 passat estate 1.9 TDi 130 but after 6 months I really didn't like it so I then got this Mondeo, don't get me wrong it's a lovely drive and goes like a greased weasel and knocks out high 60s/low 70s on a run which I think the 6th gear really does help, but I do prefer the 406 for long runs and that's all we ever do in the family wagon so this is why I'm after one.
The Mondeo does have high miles on it of 175,000 but its had all its bad bits done before I bought it ie, DMF and clutch, two injectors and fuel pump and all I've had to do is put a new alternator on it and two tyres on the front but its now coming due a MOT and a post jumped out and hit the drivers rear quarter panel just under the rear light (not very big) but its do I sort this out and MOT it and sell it or trade it as it is! I've been offered £800 on trade in as it is and that's in a deal for a 53 SE 406 estate that's up for £1995 but if I could get £1000 for it or even a swap for a 406 estate se or exec I'd be happy. The only thing is I want a 406 that newer than 2001. I'm I able to offer the mondeo for sale or swap in the for sale section on here?

IMHO start with a 2.2 - apart from the performance gains, they're smoother and quieter too, (though a 110 would be more economical).
They do have dpf's, which used to be a problem, but now removal is easy and cheap.
As Rich says, they are easily remapped to 180 bhp, or more......
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Well that's given me something to think about! I must admit I really do like the sound of 180 bhp, especially after a friend of mine let me have a blast in his E60 525d which he has just had remapped from 167 to 210 and my god it flys, plus I forgot just how much fun rear wheel drive is!!!! He give his guy a call and he come back with a price of £150 to do a 406!
