I once worked for a month at the Trieste Elettra particle accelerator, there of course we had tons and tons of copper and of many more expensive materials.

Once they discovered that lots of copper was disappearing from the waste pile far from the buildings, there was a man stealing it.
I don't think he lived enough to appreciate the money he gained with it, he had been stealing highly radioactive copper for a month

Seriously, I just wonder how much of that ended up being recxcled into plumbing, wiring, circuit boards or whatever and made it into people's homes.
