head unit swap, and bugger me what a fault lol

Hi all,

just thought id share a bit of a weird fault i had when i was swapping my head unit, basically me standard tape player went tits up ( the rear channels just disappeared from settings to sound ) so i thought id fit my JVC KD-LHX502 touchscreen head unit i had in my d8 406, i thought it would go in a d9 a piece of pi$$, wrong lol. connecting it was fine no problems there, i only knew sumot was up when i got yelled " turn that bloody music down " i thought, no way can they hear that in the house its near enough mute, its only when i opened the door and heard music belting out full pelt from under my bonnet, somehow, i still dont know how but the radios output found its way into the alarms loudspeaker, the output from the radio supplied the cars speakers, as it should as well as the bloody claxon for the standard fit manufacturers non buggered about with alarm.

what the hell ??? ive since took the head unit out and fitted a standard pug cd player which is stupidly loud itself even set on 1 with loud mode on its damn loud, ( but thats cool i dont mind that lol ) but if anyones had this sort of fault before, funny one i have to admit, do let me know

Ah now pearl, this subject's been on here before too. I think the upshot was that there's a setting on the head unit to tell it if it's amplified or not. Then it adjusts it's output volume accordingly. i.e. amped = low output, unamped = high output. Therefore if the stereo thinks it's not externally amplified then when you run it through the amp the volume is too high, in fact i think the original thread was along the lines of someone not being able to get the volume low enough to be able to hold a comfortable conversation in the car, even with the vol on 1.

ah theres me not looking through the forums properly oops

so with this unamped and amped setting on the head unit, is it something that any old flap cap nut cruncher can do or is it a dealer job ? because i had to get it coded i didnt really look a great deal at the head unit itself i sat it in the footwell, then after the dealer had it, it appeared in me dash, very bad home mechanics i know but i thought im paying 30 quid they might as well fit it as well

I dunno mate. I did try to search for the old fred earlier but couldn't find it (I've never had much luck with the search function on here ) I can't even remember who said it, Supafrisk maybe?
