Stereo upgrade to Alpine MP3 and some issues along the way

Post by Avgasandy »

Hi all i had the clarion unit in my MK2 406 it crackled would only ever find 2 or 3 different channels and would not turn off some times, so rather than punch it i thought upgrade time.

I bought a plastic shroud off ebay not a bad bit off kit for new stereo to sit in and lukily the pugs electric sockets were the right type for the Alpine. Turned on stereo and hey fantastic sound.

This is where the problems then came to light

1 The electrics on the pug socket are the wrong way round for the Alpine would not remember its settings. Not a problem though swapped the yellow and red supplys around (problem cured one thought). Now when i turn the ignition off the stereo stays on for around 30 sec before it turns off (strange never had that before in a car) but remebers its memory now.

2 The display that shows date time and what channel i was on with the clarion rather than stay on all the time with ignition in the first position flashes on and off every 15 seconds or so now with the alpine fitted untill econmy saving mode kicks in and turns it off completey. Cannot understand why it flashes on and off now.

3 Worth changing head unit for the sound quality though although its a shame to make control stalk and half of the display redundant, the other little quirks that seem to have arisen i can live with.
May one day find an ignition sense and run it to hesd unit to stop delay in the stereo turning off.

But hey its summer that can wait (real reason its pissing it down again cannot play outside).

Like to hear your stories on after market steroes

Cheers
Andy
