Speaker mounts

Post by Nightshade »

Ladies, Gents.

Anyone know the size of the front speaker mounts in my D8 estate?
I'm trying to collect everything I'll need before pulling off the door cards and installing. Laziness, would be an accurate description I guess.

I'd like to grab some MDF rings but unsure on thickness.
Then half a ton of deadening and amplifier wiring and we'll see what the standard speakers can handle.

it's the usual 6.5"/17cm speaker that's in there. Why do you need the rings there? They are screwed onto the door card, which is screwed onto the door (same set of screws).

Stock speakers aren't much cop anyway, can get a pair of cheap aftermarket replacements for £20!

Exactly that. Ideally we want the most solid mount possible for speakers - actually concrete or even granite is the ultimate solution, but mdf is a bit cheaper and easier to work with :cheesy: . With an mdf mount, less power is lost making the flimsy mount/ door card vibrate and resonate, leaving more juice available to produce those lovely sounds. The end result is a clear sound, with particular improvements in mid bass.

Lee, you'd be surprised what stock speakers can do. 90% of sound quality comes from your installation and 10% from the quality of the speakers.
Stocks on a good solid mounting, in a well deadened door with mass loaded vinyl on the inside skin and fed a healthy 50 watts or so from a decent amplifier will outperform many an expensive speaker that's been just swapped in.
