whistling

Post by totaleclipse »

fitted a jvc cd player in my 2.1 exec estate as the disc changer in the boot seems to go in a huff somtimes and say it has no discs in it, lol.

basically if i listen to FM i get whistling most of the time, if i listen to a cd it whistles (not as loud) somtimes but not others.

put the cd player in my rover coupe to check it and its perfect.

any ideas whats up here?

Roger Whittaker's hiding in your boot? Does it go up and down with engine speed? It could be a bad earth.

Yep, as Steve said, if the pitch changes with engine revs then it's likely to be a dogy earth somewhere. If you use amps to power the speakers and if they are all earthed to different points, then that can cause it. You can also get something called a Ground Loop Supressor (iirc) which supposedly helps to cure this problem. Not sure how it's fitted or works, but there you go!

i'll try earthing it to the big metal beam behine the dashboard then.

the car doesn't have amps in it (at least not ones i've fitted, lol) but the rover has 3x 4 channel 1000w amps and i have never had an issue like this in it.

Might also be picking up emf from the alternator .. may need a small suppressor fitting .. or a cheaper solution of a lcr filter :)
