Steering wheel volume stalk problem

Yet another problem has been added to the pile, the steering wheel volume stalk has completely died. I'm not sure if it's got a fuse or if it's connected to the radio but a little annoying when trying to change volume whilst driving. If anybody could help me out here. A new stalk is not really an option. Thanks

It's a 2002 so not the new style.

2002 would be "the new style", your car must have sat around for a bit.

Do the old stalks only do volume or does the other stuff work?

Ah crap, I thought I'd better check in case anyone suggested it and D8 stalks are different.

it's completely dead, no movement on volume mode or change.

Does the change (mode?) work or is that borked too? Could it just need "reseating" (disconnecting and plugging in again)?

Nothing is working. I have tried to disconnect and reconnect the battery terminal but that hasn't changed anything, how would I go about resetting it, would I have to take the stalk off?

On the wiring diagram it looks like it's got a socket on the stalk and the other end is plugged into the MFD (why?)

Thanks for the help! Took off the steering wheel column casing and found a wire had been rubbing up on the steering rack itself. Soldered back on and it works.
