This may be a bone stupid question.
I have used the above product a number of times on cars that haven't been washed for a while, as is the case with the 406. It seems to work well, just requiring a long time and a lot of water to help it along. My question is: from what I can remember from the side of the bottle, it appears to be basically petrol or another strong solvent. Would I be going badly wrong if I just cleaned off the tar spots with ordinary petrol? Would be a lot cheaper at £1ish per litre, compared to £6.79 for 325ml of the Autoglym product.
Any advice gratefully received.

Petrol will remove the tar, but it doesn't do the paintwork any favours. At best it will remove any wax/sealant, at worst (I've heard) it can damage the clearcoat.
It depends on your priorities, but I've stuck with a product like Iron-X If you do use petrol, replace the protection (wax or whatever) afterwards.
