Air Pump Relay Permanent Fault

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Air Pump Relay Permanent Fault

Post by OloyeChartered »

Good day all,
After scanning my Peugeot 406, it showed Air Pump Relay Permanent Fault.
Please what does this mean?

Hello. I've split this into a new topic because I'm not even sure it's anything to do with air conditioning - is this from a fault code? I'm not sure what an air pump is doing on a 406, emissions? Or do you mean the a/c compressor?

There is a vacuum pump on the gearbox end of the cylinder head but as far as I know no electronics involved with it and if that had failed you wouldn't have much in the way of brakes or turbo boost.

The aircon pump is for gas not air so I am mystified too!

Thanks Steve - I couldn't figure out how to split it off.

Suspect the OP is referring to an air pump used to help catalytic converter operation on a petrol engine

2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)

While I've time... Just looking in Haynes, apparently there is a secondary air injection system fitted to 1.8 petrols that involves an air pump (something about pumping air in the exhaust to increase heat and get the cat working). Nothing to do with air conditioning :!:

Presumably the ecu is not seeing the system turned on and is flagging it, could be the relay, the connections, the wiring, the ecu.... Powers and grounds I guess, look for a positive supply at the relay, an earth (negative), look for the ecu turning it on (tricky without Peugeot Planet I guess) and look for a load. I have no idea where such a relay would be located though!

That would account for it - I don't know anything about petrols.

the pump is locate around your front left tire, is close to fog light , u can access it when u remove the sound protector, if it show permanent fault it mean either the connection is open or the pump is bad and it need replacement, next the check the relay the supply current to it.
