wiper fuse keeps blowing

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Post by Dano41 »

D8 1.9TD

The part's diagram shows it under the dash. And under the bonnet

I'm not sure if this will be your problem but yes it's a good place to start.

I tried to look online last night at the fuse diagram but I was having difficulty....

I'm not sure if the fuse is shared with something else, but have a look online:

There's bugger all for a D8 I'm afraid, the part's diagrams just show an arrow pointing to the interior fuse panel and another pointing to the underbonnet fuse panel. The only thing it does say is it's a timer relay, so it'll be bigger than the ordinary relays.

If I remember correctly, if you find the relay - you can remove it.
The wipers will still work but you lose the delay function.

I've checked my Handbook ( mines a 1998 )
Fuse 24 is a 30a and is used by the wipers, wiper timer, heated screen timer, cruise control and the windscreen washer pump.

Nothing about the relay or its location.

Dug in behind the fuse panel on the other 406 and located a relay which was clicking when I changed the speed of the wipers, changed it with my 406 and the wipers are working but not as they should there are two speeds and a fast speed.I put the relay from my car back in the old one to try it and those wipe work as they should one wipe stop and so on.Any advice please?

That could be the default strategy, if it's seeing a fault the system defaults to a standard intermittent, rather than using the rain sensor.

So it means that let's say I hate the auto wiper and would rather have intermittent speed, I could just remove the relay?

The rain sensors either seem to work ok or they're rubbish, the one on my D8 worked fine but on the D9 I had to turn it off and on a few times before it did something I liked.

Umm, not the relay as they won't work at all, rather it needs to see a fault but I'm not sure if you could just unplug the rain sensor or you'd need to reprogram it slightly with, say, a hammer.

I had been puzzled by continous blowing of fuse 24 (30A) when ever I tried to operate the front windscreen wipers. Initially it was only when I tried the intermittant action setting for the wipers. But finally the fuse was blowing whenever I just turned the ignition on. 406 estate D8 petrol model. So pleased that I found the post initially by Peugeot 406 Wiper Faults Post by fuel » Sat May 29, 2010 4:12 am. This stopped me from jacking the vehicle and exposing the full run of all the cables to look for a chaffed thro section that was causing a dead short. Following Fuels post I removed the blue coloured relay and problem solved. All functions for the services served by the no 24 fuse work perfectly except the intermittant wiper function and the self parking aspect - as mentioned by GingerMagic. I can live with that no problem. The relay was a swine to get at and remove but I managed it and am delighted with the result. I can buy a new relay but I don't think I will bother. Thankyou chaps!!
