Air bag fault / warning

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Air bag fault / warning

Post by dirtydirtydiesel »

Hi all,

Not needed to post for a while due to the old bus behaving her self,
That was up until I bought her replacement

For a few weeks now I've had on the M.F.D upon turning on the ignition

Air bag fault, followed by passenger air bag disconnected & then the airbag illuminated on the dash
as well as the air bag symbol.

No problem I thought, seat connectors 'WRONG' so had a session with pp2k
Did a global test & came back with this.

Built - in systems interface : Permanent fault. Communication with the airbag E.C.U

Also this

Instrument panel : Remote intermittent fault. No communication on the data wire
& No communication on the data bar wire

I'm stuffed, I have no clue where to start looking

I hope some of you can help.

I can't post pictures, sorry . You will have to make do with me typing out what it says on the screen.

Thanks in advance , Paul.

Had something similar with one of my bro's 406's which we managed to clear by unplugging / replugging the multi pin connector on the airbag ecu, which was under the centre console section in front of the handbrake. I think it was possible to access it without completely removing the plastic cover, but it's a while ago and I'm not sure.

Mine started doing this with the airbag and then the rest of the electrics went downhill fast. The standard waterlogged driver's footwell was soon found even though it looked fine from on top. The multiplex plugs are rotted through. Some of the wires are rotted off completely.
Does anyone have the locations for wire colours or numbers for the Blue connector? I only have Green to Orange and Orange to Grey left and a purple wire still located, the rest of the wires on the blue connector are floating free and would be guesswork.

I have sorted out the wires and the airbag, fuel flap and countless other faults have gone. Mauve wire 1288 at the centre of the 5 pins of the blue 10 pin plug does not have a companion wire to go to but the hole in the connector looks pretty gross, as if it has had one in there. The is the piezo signal measurement wire so it is no surprise that the key symbol is lit and PP2000 cannot reset the keys. So it is back to the drawing board. So far I have not been able to find 1288 or IC11B 10V on any diagrams.

If you post me (via PM if you like your privacy) your VIN number i can look up some electrical schematics for you in SEDRE.

Got your PM. This is what Service Box tells us:

Vehicle family: 406 (RESTYLING)
AS/RP N°: 09797 89 2 0182 ==> RPO Number is 9797
SILHOUETTE: 5 DOOR ESTATE
ENGINE: DW12TED4 TURBO DIESEL
TRANSMISSION: BVM5
ABS: WITH ABS BRAKES
DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM: WITHOUT ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM
DRIVING POSITION: RIGHT HAND DRIVE

I entered this data in SEDRE, but I cannot seem to find a 10-way connector in the footwell. I was able to find a "IC11B 16V BA": 16-way, color white?? Does the below diagram have any resemblance to your vehicle?
Component IC11C.jpg
Plodding along, I cannot find the diagram showing the which wires go into the "IC11B 16V BA" connector (if any...)

I found something by searching for "IC11B 10V" on this forum. This is the topic I found: http://406oc.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15593 . Maybe that helps?

I'm a bit in the dark here, I'm afraid :?

Here is a diagram that shows IC11A, D and E:
Component CV00.jpg
Suddenly, IC11A has 16 pins?? (it had 6 pins in the previous diagram :? )

Anyway, seems like IC11D and E connect the air bag ECU (6570) with the COM2000 unit (CV00).

6565 is the "driver airbag module" (in the steering wheel).

Thanks for those Erik. The layout in my car is definitely only four connectors not five as shown in the diagram. The connector giving me trouble (because I seem to be a wire short) is definitely coloured blue and a 10V
The forum link you found is describing the exact connector I also have. I will be away from home for the rest of the week but will then continue with the puzzle.
I have hired a Mercedes diesel estate for the trip and comparing it to an elderly Peugeot 406, the Peugeot is so much nicer to drive.

Hi Doggy,

Sorry for the very protracted reply

I've tried this today, as I'm in lockdown

Still the same original issue, nothing so far has fixed this.

Fingers crossed for footwell conectors or com's unit, only thing is I have zero other issue's unlike Hdi.

Re: Air bag fault / warning

Hi all,

Nearly a year on & still no joy :(
If I can't get to the bottom of this soon then sadly it'll be up for spares or repairs.
A real shame as it starts, run's, drives great but I can't get a MOT due to the airbag light.

It's got zero rust except for the front edge of the bonnet & since 105k it's had a new Luk dmf with full Luk clutch kit, head off skimmed, polished & ported, new turbo, intercooler & loads of genuine Bosch & VDO sensors ect.

But as of today still no dice with the airbag ECU & yes I purchased a new old stock one, still no dice :(

Today I have done the usual checks before the screen on my ageing Dell latitude xp laptop died :frown:
It's something to do with the backlight.

So if anyone can advise?
Here's what's been done/checked today.

Airbag ECU plugged in & out a few times & the contacts cleaned with Servisol super 10

It keeps coming up on pp2k that the airbag ECU has not replied or it's not connected or seeing it.
The old & new ECU are both giving the same issues

So all the usual checks & tests are pointless because its not connecting to the airbag ECU, it's like it's not plugged in.

Yes I've checked all the driver's footwell connections, all mint & bone dry just as they were when I first checked when I first got the car.

I would attach pictures but the forum is saying they're to big.

I need to sort something out because it's just sitting going to waste & my 5er is bleading me dry.
So I need to get a cheap car to run round in 406

I decide which way to go for the future, I think the 5er has got to go, lovely car when good but soooo complicated & expensive to fix.

Any help or genuine advice for the Pug greatly appreciated.

Cheers all DDD.

Hi Paul,

As you say, my first thought is also that the Airbag ECU is not getting any power. That would explain why PP2000 cannot connect to it, and why there is a permanent communication failure. Apparently the replacement ECU is also not getting any power. Did you have the replacement ECU tested before you bought it?

If you PM me your e-mail address I will give you mine so that you could send me the pictures via e-mail.

So sad if this would mean scrapping it. Thinking "out of the box": take the ferry and spend 1,5 days then we could have a look together. I'm pretty sure this is something that we could solve. I have a working model here on the parking lot to compare against :cheesy:

I will have a look at the schematics tomorrow, focusing first on the +12 V supply lines and fuses.
