Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Radio Player Problem - Peugeot 406 HDI

Post by AndreiNCS »

Hi guys,

In the last year my stereo had moments when he was stoping, all of a sudden. After seconds or even minutes, it started at once...and so on. Last month it died...I've been waiting days and no start. I mention that it was PHILIPS, the one with tape, not CD. Yeserday I bought a second-hand player, Clarion. I connected it and I have the next problem: player starts, I can see FM frequencies and all the info's, I can even control it from the stering wheel commands, but I can barely hear a sound and it has an beep at every 2-3 seconds. From what I read on the internet , beeping it's becaunse it needs the VIN of the car... my biggest problem is why the low volume.... with the enegine started I can't hear anything, and even with the ignition off, I have to listen carefuly to hear a thing.

Sorry for my bad English and my poor explanation.

Any of you, any sugestion, please?? :cheesy:

Last week I was using an portable speaker connected to my phone as a music solution.

The low volume is because it isn't coded, it should be normal volume with no beeping when it is all matched together.
A Peugeot dealer or a member with PP2000 can do this for you.
2003 2.2hdi estate - mine
1998 Volvo 940 auto estate - also mine
2019 Citroen C3 something - the wife's

Hi, GingerMagic and thanks for your answear!

So going at a Peugeot dealer to introduce the car VIN into the stereo settings with the proper tools, should solve not only the beeping, but also the low volume??

Yes, I'm pretty certain it will - however it's worth talking to the dealer first for confirmation.
Hopefully it won't cost an arm and a leg - it may be cheaper to drive to a fellow member and get it done for free, or maybe beer tokens.

Edit; Yours is an Hdi so I guess it's made after 1999? You had a Phillips stereo which I assumed was early models only - can you confirm your year or manufacturer?

The beeping is because it isn't coded to the car, but the volume is probably down to whether it's got an integral amplifier or is expecting to use the external Clarion amp. Some of the later head units could be configured for either.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Yes, it's an HDI from 2002 wich had an PHILIPS stereo ...but after his "dead", i bought second hand Clarion wich from my understanding it was from an 406 coupe.

I'm from Romania, i would go to anyone who coulded help me but sadly, not to many owners of 406 around here...I din't find a man with Peugeot proper tester, only guys with universal testers ...that's why I'm searching on forums from other countries :D

Hi, Doggy

The stereon has a setting AutoVolume wich is default on "ON". I cand change all the settings of the stereo, balance, loudness and so on, excepting that AutoVolume... could be this the reason?

No, I don't think so. Al the auto volume does is increase the volume as you drive faster.

You should be fine with a 2002 car, I must admit I've never seen a Phillips radio in a late 406....
It is possible to send your Clarion radio to someone with a 406 and PP2000 so they can program it for you - takes 5 minutes - and then it can be posted back to you already coded so you can fit it straight in.

I just went to the Peugeot representance and they told me the volume issue is caused by the Carion stereo...something broken in it ...and introducing the car VIN into the stereo it's 30£ but it doesn't make sense to do that for a broken stereo... so in conclusion I need to search for another second hand stereo...

Thank you all for your sugestions and help!!!
