Another 307 issue BSI has lost VIN code

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Another 307 issue BSI has lost VIN code

Post by Doggy »

Hi folks,

Our other 307, (other daughter's partner has a 52-plate 1.6 HDi estate), has now died. :(
He's had a few BSI sounding glitches recently, engine cutting out, lights etc. but last Friday it stopped altogether and refused to budge.
They got the RAC out, who diagnosed a dead lift pump, (sounded convincing since he got it going briefly by thumping the tank), got it recovered home.
He fitted an new lift pump this morning and it started, but ran rough & wouldn't idle, EML on.
I plugged in PP2k and noticed that instead of the VIN it displayed bpbpbpbbpbpb, (or similar).
Engine ECU status is 'ECU Locked', (waiting on comms from BSI).
BSI says the same, plus in status it says, "Blank BSI.................................YES"

Now, I didn't think it was possible to 'unconfigure' the BSI without replacing an eprom/eerom or similar.

Anybody got any clues what else we can try? I'm thinking get an engine ecu/bsi/lockset and keys from a scrappy, but I'd welcome any other suggestions.

No, but it has been wet at some point.
Cleaned the board up & reseated the connectors multiple times.
I've found other peoples tales of woe, which indicate the VIN code being replaced by a string of 'P's indicates BSI corruption due to battery ills / ignoring the 3-minute rule.

Now we've got it stuck in Economy Mode with the driver's window down and no way of starting it.

You can tow it to get it out of economy mode to get window up.

Do you know if that works because the alternator starts charging / raises the battery voltage (despite the fact the engine won't run)?

If that's the case, I can maybe do the same with the charger / jump leads

There must be a simple answer to this and G-forbid it doesn't lie in "well proven"(note the exclam marks) Peugeot ECU or BSI..
I wouldn't even think that water ingress can be the cause but probably your first starter for ten is making sure with another Pug that your VIN return/Pp2000 is erroneous..

If the BSI EEPROM is indeed corrupted then it can't be reconfigured. Assuming that everything else in the BSI is OK, the EEPROM can be wiped to 0xFF all over to 'virginise' it, then it can be configured as a new BSI in PP2000.

Alternatively a replacement BSI can be sought and configured as a new one.

You'll need the 4-digit key code to do this but I think that it all. The mileage will be retrieved from the clocks.

Thanks Jon, I remember reading your post about this, but don't trust myself to do the soldering etc.

The car's worth maybe £6/700 tops as a runner, so I think swapping a working set of ecu/bsi/key transponder chip will be the easiest/cheapest way around it.
(I guess I can mount the transponder chip in an existing key or tape it on somewhere within range of the receiver)?

Any other info or suggestions gratefully received.

If you want to send me the BSI I can have a poke around and see what I can do.

I don't think you've got anything else to lose at this stage!

If I can't resurrect the old BSI, it will at least let me see whether I could virginise a replacement for you, so that you only require a replacement BSI, not a full locks/keys/clocks set. If it's a similar setup to the 406 then I can do this.

Unfortunately it did not prove practical to recover/virginise the existing BSI, so we're left with getting a set from a scrappy.

I have several questions & hope someone knows the answers:

1. I believe the parts that have to match for the engine to start are the engine ecu, BSI & the transponder chip in the ignition key. You should not need to change the physical locks unless you want to, (True/False/Comments)?

2. I hope that a matched set from a different car will be configurable via PP2K to change the number of doors, rear wash/wipe etc. (True/False/Comments)?

3. Is there any reason why you would also have to change the BSM, (under bonnet fusebox)?

I would appreciate any information, (or even suspicions), you may have.

To the best of my knowledge all you should need is ECU, BSI, Ignition key/transponder all from the same vehicle ie matching units..
Around 100 quid on ebay..

Pse note I did say to the best of my knowledge as you should easily be able to change over the plip pcb and battery from the new key to your present one which should save on changing ignition barrel/door locks/locking petrol cap if fitted etc etc..
If you don't have the exclusive key code for the new key from the vendor a word of warning!
After fitting the new BSI/ECU etc and changing over the plip pcb and battery to the old key do not rpt not repeatedly press the key button in the vicinity of the car as I understand this will bring up a "break in" situation and shut down the automatic door locking system permanently! It can only be resurrected by PP2K if you have the aforementioned key code.
Test the key well away from the car just to see if the LED is flashing which should indicate it is transmitting and hopefully all will work...

The bitz finally arrived late yesterday afternoon & got fitted this morning.
BSI works, (at least he can shut the windows), but it won't start, (runs on easystart briefly).
I'll have a look this evening, I'm hoping it's not 'seeing' the transponder chip and I can resolve it.
(Owner reckons it has never had an audible warning for leaving the key in the ignition and isn't showing a transponder-related warning light).

Fingers crossed a bit more.
