Anti Theft Device Defective error

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Anti Theft Device Defective error

Post by CountryGent »

Hi There 406 friends
My 2003 2.2 HDI has been a good friend. Yesterday, after disconnecting the battery so i could weld an exhaust bracket, i attempted to set off to do the school run and the key warning light was on (Never ever seen it before)
Now its 24 hours later, I've tried everything i can find searching google. Spoken to an auto locksmith who told me that in his work life he had never seen a Peugeot key lose its code and was reticent to come out to fix it as it was likely to be something else.
Fact is i don't have £100 to throw away and need to resolve this myself. Ive even acquired a PC app called PP2000 that can assist, but of course i don't have the correct interface for it, it doesn't recognise the KWP2000 interface i already have.
I so hope someone can offer some assistance here as i can't go to work or collect the kids or anything..

Fingers crossed
Lee

PP2000 is just the software, you need the hardware interface to go with it. It does not support generic interfaces like the ELM327 or KWP2000.

It is not the key that "forgets" the code, it is the BSI (the car-side, if you like). This can be caused by improperly shutting down the BSI when disconnecting the battery.

Where are you based?

You may be able to find someone nearby who can do a PP2000 session for you

The PP2000 session will tell you what the car things is wrong with the key. It can also re-programme the keys.

You will need the secret code to re-programme the keys. This was provided on a credit card sized card with the car. Bettyswollocks on PeugeotForums can obtain codes.

The most common problem is the aerial around the ignition barrel that reads the ID chip in the key -- it's cheap and easy to replace. But of course given the circumstances that led to this problem, this seems unlikely.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

I lost remote central locking sync when I disconnected the battery on my first 406 and could only get it back by reprogramming the BSI to 'learn' the keys with PP2000. My experience is not unusual, but I've not heard of the same thing happening with the immobiliser transponder.

Nothing to lose trying a BSI reset, failing that switch the igniton on, then off, leave the kesys in & open the driver's door - see if you get the beep / key still inserted message.

I made the mistake a few years back disconnecting and reconnecting the battery without following the correct procedure and ended up with the key symbol and "immobiliser fault" on the MFD,i had to get an auto electrician out to reset the key to the car but luckily I had the 4 digit code.I have pp2000 on a laptop (courtesy of Sam) but have never used it or connected it to a car so unsure if it works but your welcome to give it a try and I am in Oxfordshire but you will need the 4 digit code for your car before you can do anything I fear.

Thanks so much
I found someone yesterday who could get the code to me for £20. I'll do that and PM my phone number to you so we can make a plan. So grateful. Forums are an amazing resource..

Hopefully that sorts the problem, it sounds like it should. Make sure you follow the shut-down/start-up BSI procedure in the future to minimise the chances of it happening again :D
