Dash display

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Dash display

Post by hugh »

Hi all,

I mentioned in another thread that the dash display is too dim to see. By this I mean the screen that tells you what you're listening to, the time etc, above the climate control. It displays everything OK - I can see now that I'm listening to Heart and it's 16:17 on the 19th (wrong time), but in the sun / dark when driving, I can't see the display. Someone mentioned that this is an easy fix; could a kind soul with 5 minutes describe how, please?

I have a Haynes on order, so do feel free to tell me just to wait for that.

Regards

Hugh

Hi Hugh, there is a blank panel each side of the display, these just prise out from the top with a blade or something, but they scratch easy so be careful.

With these removed you will see 4 torx screws, unscrew these and the display should come out with a little wiggle.

Behind the display is the connector, which is a push tap/pull lever action - and you will also see 3 bulb holders, these simply twist anti-clockwise to come out.

Bin the bulbs, put new ones in ( ebay specials are fine.. ) and Bob's your Mum's Brother.

You will need to reset the time/date - keep the left button pushed in for a few seconds to access the menu, its a bit like setting the time on a video player ( remember those..?? )

P.S. I have a Haynes manual in PDF format, if you like I can email it - well, I can try .....

OK, so I got the bulb holders out and put it all back together without scratching anything. Result!

Next challenge: how do I get the bulbs out of the holders??? Sorry, I know that must sound like a daft question. They're fastened in there pretty tightly and I don't want to start fiddling too much in case I break something delicate.

I think they just pull out, can you see if the bulbs are blown?

Turns out they do pull out - thank you. Sorry about that - didn't want to force anything and necessitate an expensive trip to the Peugeot parts desk.

The bulbs (all three) have a blackish tint to them. Not sure if they're meant to be like that or if it's because they're burnt out.

Does anyone know a type number so I can have a look for replacements please?

Thank you very much - Internet has been on the blink. Did not mean to ignore your kind advice.

Bulbs ordered, excited about fitting them.

No problem :)

Just be careful pushing them into the holders, I carelessly broke one and got blood everywhere :cheesy:

It may be a bit late but if you ask at your local motor factors the bulbs are pennies and usually in stock, a multi pack of ten will probably cost less than buying a couple.

Thanks. I got 10 through eBay, was less than £2. I saw them in Halfords yesterday, think it was £2 for a single one. They don't call it Hellfrauds for nothing! Good news is, I just put the bulbs in and it works! RESULT! Dad will be so pleased. Only thing is, I dropped one of the screws down the back  will I have to take the whole centre console out to get at that?

Potentially yes you'd have to strip the centre console to find it unless it works itself under the side vent covers.
If it doesn't rattle I'd be inclined to leave it or visit the breakers and pocket some spares!

Hi Hugh, I dropped a bolt too - the top right one.

I never found it, although it didn't rattle or anything so I replaced the bolt with a scrapper one..... :cheesy:

Thanks guys, it doesn't seem to rattle so I'll just get another bolt I guess.
