12 volt feed that works thru ignition accessory switch.

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

12 volt feed that works thru ignition accessory switch.

Post by dustyv »

Hi Guys,

Can anyone tell me in layman's terms how I can tap a 12 volt feed (for a second cigar lighter) that routes through the accessory side of the ignition switch?
[Like on pre 1999 cars]
The current lighter is a constant live, and if leaving the car whilst charging the phone, sat nav etc, I tend to find the battery very low in the morning.
Memory is not what is used to be.
My idea is a second lighter routed as mentioned so it shuts off when the ignition key is removed.
However I haven't a clue, so if someone could explain to me how to do it - I would be grateful.
Thanks

Hiya mate,

I do believe there's a two position fuse for the lighter, so by moving the fuse to the other position you'll be able to change it from "permanent live" to "accessory live".

Here you go, might not be the right fusebox layout for your car but this should help you...

You really need to test the fuse because it's not always obvious if they're blown (especially if your eyes are as bad as mine...)

Thank you very much for both your replies - excellent.
You were correct in that, in my fuse box is different to the diagram (position wise) mine is No: F5 (on the bottom row).
However I have moved it's position as advised - perfect - just what I wanted, switched off when key removed.
Thank you for your invaluable assistance - much appreciated.

Being cheeky now;
I have an aftermarket radio fitted which I have to manually switch off (it does go off after the 30 mins mode) could I piggyback the feed to the radio to the feed to the lighter?
Obviously an inline fuse would have to be fitted.

Appreciate your views.

Many thanks again.

HI and welcome aboard. 8)

The ISO power connector to the original radio would have had both permanent and ignition live connections, chances are the aftemarket unit just hasn't been connected correctly.

If you add a few more details about your car, we can probably tell you the pin assignments for your connector.

I would suspect your battery is on the way out if charging a phone overnight runs it down.

I had a similar thing with aftermarket radio, I had to swap red and yellow over, switched and unswitched appeared to be wrong way round

FWIW, on a previous car I fitted a cigarettle lighter socket in the back. I ran the original feed wire to a relay, and a fused live from the battery to both lighter sockets via the relay. I am not sure that the ignition switch would take an extra socket as most of what it does power is already relayed.

Hi Guys,
Thank to all for the useful suggestions - most welcome.
Original issue sorted.

Story so far regarding the radio;
Decided to replace the 'old' Clarion (aftermarket) radio with a Sony CDX-G1000U.EUR.
Fitting was straight forward, however the radio stayed on.
Adopted the advice re changing the wiring i.e. Yellow to Red & Red to Yellow, that did make a difference in that the radio now remembers the stations.
But it still does not shut down via the ignition switch.
I am not an electrician so I am a bit out of my depth here.
Would it be OK to piggy back the 'live' feed (but which one from the radio?) to the cigarette lighter feed - now that we have sorted that via the ignition?
Ever in your hands Guru's
Pleased with any advice offered.
Thanks again.

Peter, did manage to find that the cause was the boot light being on all the time - small piece of debris on the lock.
These cars are really sensitive.
Oh the battery is new, garage fitted so assume it's the correct one.
Cheers

I would not advise using an existing feed for a second cigarette lighter. You could piggy back from your radio to a relay to fire up a second socket, but I still think it would be easier to use the original lighter power supply and run a relay to both lighters.

Thanks to all for the sound advice and assistance.
I have now reproduced this issue in the section "ICE & In-car technology".
As the original issue was sorted and this is now a seperate ICE issue.

Thanks again

All phones and satnavs can be charged or run from a USB socket on a PC so why bother with a second cigar lighter.
12 to 5V USB converter seems the best answer with the glove compartment light the nearest and easiest 12V power source.
