A few weeks back I was driving along, and the indicators stopped working. Only they didn't, it turned out to be the "click click" and the green lights on the dash, outside was fine. The next day they were working again, and have been intermittent ever since.
A couple of weeks ago I was driving along quite merrily, and suddenly the speedo, tacho and temperature gauge went to 0. The fuel gauge remained at normal level (the fuel light actually came on at one point, but FUEL LEVEL LOW didn't appear on the display). I also "think" that the centre climate control button lights were dimmer than normal too. When I stopped, I took the key out the ignition, turned the lights off and the backlight, STOP light and various other lights remained on the dash for about a minute, before going off. When I restarted the car, everything was fine. This problem has also happened every couple of days since. Sometime this problem cures itself.
Last Wednesday I had a problem when I stopped for petrol, everything remained "on" in the car, and the multi function display was saying "ABS/BRAKING/BATTERY CHARGING FAULT/OIL PRESSURE INSUFFICIENT". This was fine when I restarted and stopped again later.
Last Thursday the speedo and tacho stuck at a reading for about 10 miles!
On Friday last week at night, all of the dashboard backlights on the gauge panel went off, but the speedo etc were working. Came on after a few miles. Hasn't happened since.
Today, the blower won't work in the car. Left car off for a couple of hours, still not working.
I think the blower may be a seperate issue (have checked fuses) and as the engine is the only thing that is working properly, I'm wondering if this is a fault with some kind of dashboard ECU or something like that, but I can't find an MP5.1.1 diagram for the car (which is what I "believe" it has under the lid) and I'm wondering if anyone else has had "random" faults like this.
Yeah sounds like the BSi may have an intermittent fault, or as the RAC man described a similar fault on my wife's 206 "your magic box is running low on fairy dust" . £375 that cost to fix
Best bet is to get it on a diagnostic and see what turns up.
Welcome to the forum by the way

has no one failed to realise, due to the age of this car it may be a d8 or d9?
there was a batch of d8's with BSi's but they where half d8-d9
if its a d8 then it will have the xu10j4r engine
with motronic mp5.2 management
if its a d9 then it will have the ew10j4r engine, not sure on what management this has but im sure the only difference is that this engine has a cam angle sensor, multipoint sequential fuel injection and 2 oxygen sensors and L4 emission control
if its a d9 then im 100% its a BSi

My car is the later version of 406 I believe (D9?). It's got a multifunction display and the book makes reference to the fact an option for it is a SatNav system.
Sadly it sounds like my initial thoughts were correct.... I'm not too familiar with the terms, but I'm presuming that BSi is the "magic box" which controls all the user interfaces in the car (ie everything that doesn't make the car actually go along the road).
I guess after xmas it's a trip to my local friendly mechanic (who happens to specialise in ECU/Engine Management faults) to see what he says!
Thanks again, and thanks for the welcome to your forum!

Yup that's about right, Built-in Systems Interface. When the one on the wife's 206 went it took out the wipers, indicators and central locking, and because the central locking was knackered the immobiliser wouldn't disarm either, so you could open the car with the key but it wouldn't start . Strange thing was if you left it for some random period of time it would all start working again, then stop, then start again, you get the picture I'm sure.
You could try the old "disconnect the battery for 20 mins" trick to see if it resets the computer, worked on the wife's car every time (except for once when the battery was pretty flat from trying to start it) but the problem came back a little bit quicker each time until the point where the RAC man said "Take it straight to the main dealers and try not to stall!"
