HI,
My cigarette lighter keeps blowing its fuse? i have tried a replacement whole thing including the holder etc, tried to plug in my charger and other things and it blows the fuse instantly?
anybody got any ideas as to why?

If its blowing the fuse quickly with any type of accessory plugged in it has to be a dead short somewhere in the wiring or the socket, if it only happens when you plug something in it must be in the socket itself, have you tried a known good lighter socket from a friends motor or scrappy?
doesn't have to be a 406 one, just lash up the cables a la Mr Heath-Robinson and check its not the lighter socket you have, if it isn't and which ever you try still blows the fuse then sadly you have a tracing job on your hands and thats where we need some of the real 406 geeks to step in (in the nicest way chaps
) who can tell you where the feed comes from.
just looking at this from a sadly out of date and out of shape electricians point of view and there may be an easier or better way of doing it.
Do you have access to a multi-meter? well worth a purchase if not and you dont anything fancy for doing motors but by god it can make life much much easier.

You say you've replaced the socket and it still blows, only when you plug something in?
Firstly check that whatever you're plugging in isn't shorting or taking too much current
If that's not the case, then perhaps something else is running on the circuit - perhaps an amp or a really dodgy aftermarket stereo fitting?

Yes i replaced the original complete cig lighter with a new universal one, that kept blowing the fuse, and completely destroyed my tomtom charger, so i thought ok looked at the packet and it said made in china, so i thought perhaps its made for a certain current or sumthin, so took that one out and found an old one i had in my garage that was from my old laguna, fitted that and does the same thing... so it cant be the lighter fitting itself? has to be the wiring i guess?
I havent had chance to follow the wires yet but im at a loss as to why its doing it.
If i found out ill let you guys know.

Hi, have you made sure that you have the polarity correct. The center is positive and the outer is negative\ground. I know this sounds obvious but sometime we overlook the basics and get ahead of ourselves. My socket did the same so I bought one from Maplins which needed a slight bit of adaptation but has worked fine ever since. It also has a cover to stop all the muck and crap falling in.
