Indicators and rev counter playing up

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Indicators and rev counter playing up

Post by clarkey1984 »

I just drove to work and noticed that the rev counter kept cutting out, it dropped to 0 then popped back up to the 20 mark a couple if times, then when I got to a junction the indicator started double beating, like they do when a bulb has blown, but after a few seconds it sorted itself out and went back to normal.

The exact same thing happened to my dads xantia a few months ago and after a new alternator and battery it still did it and then died on him completely, he ended up having to have major parts of the loom replaced because everything was corroded.

My car only has an 063 type battery on it which I know is too small, would this be the likely cause, she starts OK but is a bit lazy in doing so, plus if you leave the door open and indicator on I've noticed the interior light pulses with the indicator.

Thanks in advance. :)

Well I've watched it like a hawk everywhere I've been, and despite me having more electronic stuff on this morning than I needed yesterday as I now start work at half 6 in the morning, so lights, heated rear window, heater, etc, it's not done it again, just a one off it seems.

Wrong!

Ive lost and regained the fuel gauge at least 4 maybe 5 times today, it always comes back again after a few seconds, but the fact that i have some kind of intermittent electrical gremlin is worrying me, the indicators have done the double speed thing again a few times too, and I have over 600 miles to do in it this weekend.

Im going to replace the battery with a known good one from my dad tomorrow evening and see if that makes any difference, as the one i have is an 063, far too small and not upto the job of running a big diesel at all, dads new one is an 027, so still not the correct 096 size, but a step in the right direction, plus its only done about 300 miles on his xantia before being replaced by him for the right one so its got to be better than what i currently have.

Might be worth pulling the clocks out and cleaning the 2 big connectors on the back, check the PCB for dry joints while you're at it.

Might this be the crankshaft sensor?
I have a problem with my rev counter dropping to 0 while engine braking, and was told by a few on here to replace the crank sensor and see if that fixes it.
Bought one last week just haven't got around to fitting it...
