Poorly Air Con Compressor
Investigated the 'funny noise' around the Aux Belt area to find the compressor is slowly shitting itself and needs replacing:
Wideo linky:

Looks like about £300.00 for the unit, plus new belts, new gas.....blah blah.....
Speaking to my usual source of parts confirmed current demand was "so high" that they can't get one at the moment (they're all service exchange units now) apparently my compressor 'crosses over' with some Ford models (ohhhh really??)
Volvo wanted £450.00 for an re-manufactured unit and send my old one back.

Re: Poorly Air Con Compressor
Looks to me like the pulley/clutch is wobbling about I'm not sure if that's what's making the racket or if it's coming from the pump itself

Re: Poorly Air Con Compressor
The compressor has always bothered me it clicks in with such a thud I think it's always had too much resistance to it so I tend to drive with it off unless it's really needed. Now I can see it was a problem and that brown dust is a sign of bearing failure.
The end clutch part always looks weird rotating I think. The resistance in rotation has actually aged the drive belt, it must get too hot, and the belt has only done about 10K miles. I'm sort of nursing the thing along, staying off the a/c, and waiting to source a new comp. Need to hurry a bit as I've got 3 passengers to get to Wembley in 3 weeks and need it settled before then.

Re: Poorly Air Con Compressor
Hope you get it sorted as painlessly as possible.
Is it possible to find the compessor make/model and what else it's fitted to - at that price I'd certainly try a 2nd hand compressor.

Re: Poorly Air Con Compressor
I think with something as fragile as a compressor I'd always be bothered that a second hand unit will sh*t its inner parts within no time and contaminate the system.
I've managed to source a brand-new OEM one for £350.00 inc Vodka & Tonic (which I'll probably need) I dunno I'm a real puff when it comes to this car as I really want to keep it for much longer so it kinda gets 'treated' I still keep telling myself that repairs are cheaper than finance and as long as I can keep believing that..........
Watch this space.

Consider me watching
God help me to know when my car is worth spending on and when it turns into a money pit, and the ability to judge when it goes from one condition to the other and the strength to sell it before it's too late...

Re: Poorly Air Con Compressor
All fixored, Welly now eat beanz-upon-toast for next 6 months:
And the name stamped a'top the label on my old sh*t compressor..................(drum roll)......... FoMoCo
My a/c man said the Zexel's suffer with bad bearings so we got a brand-new Valeo compressor and fitted that.
The old compressor was grumbling and was running hot ready to seize up, it made a mess of the drive belt too and this belt had only done 10K miles:
The system was degassed and the gas 'wasted' into a recovery vessel. The system was hot-gas flushed and new gas was added and ran for testing and then wasted again, luckily no debris was found in the pipework, new oil fitted and finally filled with new unused gas.
System is now running quiet and mega cold so job's a good'un, 2 year Warranty too

Thanks a bunch Welly, that's the rest of the summer fooked! (You could at least have waited until after Pugfest). [/rant]Welly wrote:System is now running quiet and mega cold so job's a good'un, 2 year Warranty too

Re: Poorly Air Con Compressor
Ah, excellent
Glad you got it sorted anyway mate, although it was either that or wait for it to fail dramatically I guess. Or have a button on the dash that did exactly bugger all.
I suspect that's a big "yes"Doggy wrote:Hope it didn't cost you too much in the end.
Just imagine it, all those beans, air con on, all the windows shut, recirculate...Welly wrote:Welly now eat beanz-upon-toast for next 6 months:

It cost a lot but I wanted it done and went ahead with it. With two new Volvo-marked OE aux belts (£17.00 each with my 15% discount) and two new Oh-Rings.....fitting.... gas and oil....and the compressor.......£580.00
Hnnnnnng.......Phffffaaaafffffft, oh excuse me, those beans.

You should celebrate by coming to PugFest!
That actually seems like a fairly good price!
Are you still on your original clutch and fly Welly?

Just being nosey! My Fathers was still perfect after 105k motorway miles.Welly wrote:Yes still the same clutch but I am *very* gentle with it why do you ask?
I try to keep mine over 2k and gradually put the power on rather than slam my foot down.
My know I'm on borrowed time with mine though so it's just the waiting game now!
