White counters

The white dials on 406's seem to have been randomly fitted and rarely seen on the 2nd hand market. The 407 white dial template looks exactly the same.
Anyone any idea if I can change a black 406 background for a white one from a 407?

I've tried this personally, unfortunately it doesn't work.

- dial template is a different shape
- translucent sections that allow light through are clear, not orange, so you'd have white numbers
- the warning symbols are on the background itself, not in the plastic like the '6
- the oil temp and water temp dials are on the opposite sides on the 407, and there is no cutout for the low fuel light
- the indicators tell tails are in a different position

Hope that helps
Ben

You're not missing owt.
At twilight they light up pink and are impossible to read against the white. There are also too many graduations on the 407 speedo -- the 406 is much clearer.

If you have an HDi-engined car, then the white dials for these appear to be reasonably easy to obtain.

For petrol-engined models, they're rare as rocking-horse poop. You might be better off getting a custom set made up for you.

I have a set; I was exceptionally lucky!

Mark W ( the Coupe electric guru ) on the coupe forum did fit a 407 rev counter dial to his 406 dials, but it was a faff. The 407 dial is 2mm bigger in diameter so you will need to trim it, and use the rest of the white dials from a late Hdi.

It is possible, but its a lot of work.

I believe Mark fitted 607 dials.

As for the 407 dials, yes this is not a straightforward swap as the back is not the same shape and oil/temp gauges are reversed. However rev counter and speedometer are the same diameter.

Regarding illumination you should note that full mux 406s have a different system from non and semi mux ones. The colour is integrated to the back on the non mux whereas the colour comes from coloured LEDs on mux cars. Non/semi mux cars are also illuminated by bulbs. Last difference, the needles aren't the same, that is the shaft is bigger in the mux speedometers.

Saying that, I am actually trying to fit 407 dials to a semi mux 406 and I would happily report back the rest of my findings. It involves cutting the 407 rev counter and loads of adjustements.

If you have an Hdi then just get white dials on eBay, they are plenty of those out there and go for ~£25.
