I'm sure there's a post somewhere for this but, basically,

D8 -1996 to 1999 (until vin VF39?????8079999)
*mainly* with the slatted grille
indicator repeaters in the side trim
clock along side the instruments
sane electrics

D9 1999 to 2004 (from vin VF38?????8080000
*mainly* with the honeycomb grille
indicator repeaters above the trim
hazard warning light switch along side the instruments
until late 2001 semi-multiplex, full mux after

Nuff?

D8 and D9 are sort phase I and phase II in another words. Appearance wise there are major differences on the front and rear lights, grill, both bumpers.

Mechanically, Suspension setup, gear cables instead links, abs as standard. As a result D9 got better safety standards.

Electrically, the wiring system got multiplexed with BSIs Introduced.
