Estate Badge Removal & Possible Refurb

Post by waue1978 »

Decided last night that I'd pop the lion badge off the tailgate & see what could be done with it as it was looking a bit manky. Removal is a delicate process - the sucker is really well stuck on there. I used a screwdriver wrapped in an old teatowel to avoid scraping paint & after some careful levering (& a little bit of scrubbing to clean where the badge was) I was left with this:

& this:

Just to be safe & prevent water ingress I popped a bit of tape over the 2 holes that were left in the tailgate. Then I cleaned up all the sticky sh*te off the back of the badge & left it like this:

(note the 2 locating pins)

After a close inspection, I figured that the logo part would come away from the badge itself & using fingers & brute force I ended up with this:

The logo part wouldn't come apart any more so I binned that & cleaned up the badge to end up with this:

Not too sure what to do next. I'm thinking along the lines of getting a chrome lion from either a later 406 estate or one of the other models & seeing if it would cover the holes when fitted, but if that ends up being a dead end, I've still got the badge to play with.

Anybody have any suggestions?

The badge from the late-model estates does not fit into the holes that you're left with on your tailgate. I recall Dai telling us he'd had a go and it wouldn't fit on there because the newer-style chrome lion badge doesn't have pins on the back.

You could possibly fill in the two pin holes and paint over them (may end up looking crap though) and stick a new-style chrome lion badge there.

Or, and I suspect this may actually be easier and produce better results, you could find a late-model estate in your colour, and nick the whole tailgate off it, stick it on your car. That is, unless they made some other drastic change to the tailgate design which renders that idea completely useless.

Wasn't sure if Dai had actually tried one on it or just figured it was a stick on. Had a look on service box & there's only 1`part number for the tailgate which suggests that it may be the same badge fitting on a later one.

I could be wrong, but I couldn't say for sure either way without having a look at the later badge, but even if that turns out to be a no-go, I'm going to look into getting a chrome lion from another model if there's one that would cover the holes if placed correctly.

The standard badge is 74mm wide at it's widst point, 73mm tall & the locating pins are 46mm apart. I've found a couple of lions on Ebay measuring over 80mm. Reckon there'll be one that'll fit on there.

I only binned the manky black & silver lion bit. I still have the silver badge (shown in the last pic). How would you make up a new one? Was contemplating getting a gold lion, painting the grill lion gold & covering my chrome strips in gold for a one-off look, but can't find any proper shiny gold film or paint anywhere.

He's offline at mo, so why not pm him and ask him

Guess he already has the image of the Lion, so i'm sure it's just for size purposes to fit within the surround

Yes I suppose it is quite a resurrection!
I've had a look on and off online for a replacement boot badge but they seem far and few between :|
I did find this one at a scrap yard which had 3 406's in.
Compared to the badge on my car this one looks mint!

The best bet is to get creative & refurb your own original one,
Polish up the original aluminium badge centre, place on top a suitable lion emblem,
Spray gloss or satin black,
Remove emblem with a scaple point,
Clear lacquer,
Stand back & admire your handiwork :cheesy:
