All things come to he who waits......
arthritis,
failing eyesight,
deafness,
lower back pain,
short term memory loss,
- in fact lots of stuff you'd rather not contemplate.
Sometimes, though - it's
not bad news.
As I'm too tight-fisted to shell out £31+ for a new knob, this was an unexpected result.
Many thanks to jasper5, who found a 6-speed knob with slightly tired leather that was probably destined for the Pug dealer's bin and diverted it to a good home.
Now, an intelligent person would do some research, (i.e. seek out the coupe club Howto CJ mentioned at the top of this thread), then you would know you can simply prise the inset with the gearchange diagram out of the top of the knob, so no need to take it off the car (or risk damage to your dentures in the process).
I, on the other hand, leapt into action and swapped the knobs over first.....
The following morning, I decided I wanted to replace the leather - it's only £5.99 on e-Bay. Having no idea how to remove it, I finally engaged the brain and looked it up.
Once separated they look like this....
So, after several hours I achieved the result in the top pic, while someone with a brain could probably have done it in one hit, in about 10 minutes.
Anyway, I knew you'd all be really excited to hear about this, just like these two.
