The black vinyl on my pillars were also bubbling and cracking, so I took em off with a heat gun and plenty elbow grease.

I think the 406 looks nicer without in my opinion.

You can just see what it looks like in my photo here:

I took mine off too, looks much cleaner and a lot better. It just peels off, you can use a remover available which can remove the sticky residue behind.

Blue406, thanks for the photo. I've always wondered what a 406 would look like without the horrible plastic wrap. Beautiful picture by the way.

I've just found this thread. I take it this vinyl covering is easy to cut with a sharp knife. Was thinking of removing and replacing with new vinyl but cutting a Lion from the vinyl before replacing.Hopefully will show up quite well with the Silver background.

How did you guys remove the sticky glue after removing the black vinyl? I can't get it off, and I am reluctant to try petrol to remove it :S

You can use automotive panel wipe, that cuts through anything.
Or I used nail varnish remover. Was risky... but worked.

You know I have never noticed a black vinyl piece on D8's before, I must look out for it.

Looks a lot better without it though.

I found the perfect way to remove the sticky glue...

I bought a can of 3M's Citrus cleaner. Sprayed it a couple of times and I could just wipe it clean with a rag.
