advice on caliper overhaul kits needed

Post by johntl »

I have a 2001 hdi 110 saloon , its done 165k
Its time I got the calipers all round overhauled , as I 'm getting sick of the squeeling, rubbing sounds around the car.
Does anybody know of a good place to get overhaul kits from including the pistons, sliders etc, also looking on the interweb there seems to be 2 types which could be fitted to my car ??? ATE and ?????
Any advice much appreciated
price of remanufactured calipers seems high !!

I bought a new set some years ago - cost £75 for the pair - I just put some plastilube under the sheathes to keep the sliders from sticking 8)

I couldn't find any prices on the site Steve posted about, maybe because I'm using my phone....

That's a good price.
Truthfully I fitted the new ones, then got the old ones sliding thanks to a hammer and a vice, then lubed them up and sold them on 8)

Bad luck. :(
It does happen occasionally. The quick/dirty fix is a 2nd hand strut from a scrappy.

That is bad luck, but I've only ever know a spring to fail when stationary. Get the garage to look at the strut top bearings as when these start to fail then the stress of the front wheels turning is taken by the spring, not the bearings - leading to them snapping.
It won't happen when the car is moving as there is much less resistance.
It's a pity, but at least it can be done in one visit :?

Not good:

when n/s spring snapped it did some damage it needs: drop link, drive shaft boot, flexi brake pipe, top bearing/mount (most of ball bearing fell out) ,
getting the other spring done as well !
so with the cost of getting the the brake bits fitted as well, I'm looking at decent sized bill ! :frown: :frown: :(

The joys of motoring :frown:

total cost £380 lets hope it was worth it?

both strut top mount bearing nakt, most likely caused spring failure

So work done :
new strut top mounts / bearings (both)
2 new springs
drop link n/s
driveshaft boot
flexi hose n/s
supplied parts:
2 new rear calipers + pad pins
2 rear drop links
new pistons & seal kit for front calipers

not a bad price for the work done I think

car back on form , no noisey brakes :)

I think that is a very reasonable price - about £1 per day over the year to have all that work done - excellent :cheesy:
