Loss of power steering

My new 406 - the one that only does 37 mpg has now also lost most of its power steering, I'm hoping its only the pump as that doesn't look difficult to change, do the racks give problems on them?

If you have variable power steering then it could be the same issue as this one. In this case a new solenoid-valve was required. A fiddly, but not all that complicated operation.

Thanks, I will check that - if I have one.

I'm fairly sure only v6's had variable power steering, certainly neither of my 2.2 HDi executives did.

This is only supposition, but I'm wondering if a faulty power steering pump or rack could result in excess fuel consumption and eventual loss of assistance?
The only way I could think of checking would be to monitor the fuel flow at idle with & without the aux drive belt fitted, then compare it with a healthy 110 Hdi.
Any volunteers for comparison?

You're getting a bit technical now. It needs a new aux belt anyway and if I do have to scrap the other 406 it has a new aux belt and tensioner on it and of course a good P/S pump, it seems that the old one may well be worth more dead than alive.
