Sticking handbrake.

Post by grasmere59 »

A while back my handbrake stuck on if I left the car for a week or so,no problem as it was due for rear discs, pads etc.I changed discs, pads and handbrake shoes (full kit). All was genuine parts but now a couple of months later the handbake sticks on again when the car is left for a week or so,the handbrake shoes are sticking to the internal drum and the only way to release the brake is to rock the car forward/reverse or take the wheels off and jar the disc with a hammer.Any ideas? I have to leave the handbrake on as my drive is on a steep incline. :?

Might be the cable that's at fault.
Water /damp can build up inside & freeze.

I thought that but i replaced all the cables a couple of years ago,the cables all release (as they are slack at the backplates when the brakes stick),perhaps i'll just chock the wheels and leave with the handbrake off, they seem to seize on when it's been raning a lot.

Perhaps ..back the adjuster off a tad ..on that side
And maybe ' rough the shoes up a little with some ' sandpaper..

Jasper5 is really clued up on the rear brake set up on these
So perhaps await his advice..

Make sure you drag the handbrake for 5-10 seconds every other week or so, maybe more often if the weather is damp.

The sticking happens because the handbrake on a car with 4-wheel disk brakes doesn't see any wear normally, letting it build up rust etc.

This happens to mine if I don't use it for a while if its been previously driven in the rain, the drum rusts and the shoes stick to it but it usually comes off easily enough when I pull away, sometimes with a bit of a bang.

I'll give the handbrake drag a go,it goes off with such a bang sometimes i'm scared i'm going to rip the shoes from the backplates.

Never done it with mine in 60 years of driving - but there's always a first time.

That's what happened to mine. The brake shoe lining detached because it was stuck to the drum, and somehow got twisted and completely locked up the rear wheel.

The mechanic told me it happened due to lack of wear on the pads+drums, and to drag the handbrake periodically.
