HDI 110 - What Size Hex ?

Post by trufflehunt »

Think the caliper on rear offside is sticking, so today I've been down to Harlfods for a punch set
to remove the caliper pins.

I've checked out the Youtube video by, I think, Farmerpug.
For the top bolt of the caliper, I wanted to confirm that HEX6 means a 6mm hex socket ?
Also, is that a long socket,
and a 1/2" drive ?

The only Allen stuff I have is several sets of the ones that come on a key-ring.
So I'm trying to find the formal full name of the socket I need.

Yes, 6mm hex...6mm allen socket...you can use 1/2 inch or 3/8th.
Use a short one or you might get the socket rounding the hex off.
FP used a long one in the video but this can lead to rounding off the hexagons if the socket wobbles about too much.
If you didn't want to buy a socket you could use a normal 6mm allen key and fit a deep socket and extension on the end of the allen key to undo the bolt.

Hi, I've always found the hex to be quite easy to undo as its protected by the plastic cap, and if you find the punch doesn't work then use one of the new pins as a punch - its the same size after all.... :cheesy:

Here's hoping. I've also been dowsing both bolts with penetrating oil over the last several days.

I took one of my rear calipers off last Saturday, must confess I didn't actually look, but since a T45 key was a snug fit, I undid it with that.
Come to think of it, I left the screw on the end of the key until reassembly so never actually looked at the screw head, don't know whether it was a hex or a torx. :?
I'm almost certain the front one I took off a few years back was definitely torx. Maybe they used both types at one time or another?
