Rear suspension - parts help please?

Post by H14LSB »

I have a 2001 406 2.0HDi GLX Estate, which has developed the dreaded back end rattle on speed bumps and the usual bumpy roads.

Reading on here, I notice there appear to be TWO drop link arms on the rear of this car?

Looking on EuroCarParts website, they only sell one type for the rear, which if the photograph they illustrate it with is correct, is the "fat" type (vertical fitting?).

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Peuge ... cf8&000016

Speaking to the local Peugeot dealers parts department, they suggest it is the horizontal bar I need to replace (at £68 plus VAT per side!) - so, could somebody with a bit more sense point me in the direction of the right parts to buy - if popular opinion is to replace both links (so all 4 at the rear) at the same time, then I'm prepared for that - I feel I'm maybe getting the names mixed up on what I'm looking for???

Also, anyone know anywhere in South Manchester to pick up these parts at sensible prices - other than possibly ECP?

Many thanks for any help

Regards,
Lee.

Have a look on ebay, they are much cheaper on there but don't buy the very cheapest the rubber boots fail in about a year. Either get a well known make or compare the pictures to see which ones look best.

Unfortunately you really need to try to find which link it is, everybody's experience is different as to which is more likely to wear first. You really need to get under it or get it up in the air to find the right one, you could even find that you change all 4 and still have a noise because it's the bottom arm or something.

Its difficult to spot the wear unless you disconnect one end.

Cheers Guys,

So would I be right in thinking - having had a bit more of a look - that the parts I need from ECP are:

2 x "Suspension Arm"
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Peuge ... ac8&000320

and 2 x "Stabiliser/ Drop Links"
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Peuge ... cf8&000016

or a set:

Sorry for all the questions, but I want to try and start repairing the car myself rather than keep forking out a fortune at garages :(

Incidentally, the car is a 2001 RHD vehicle, but supplied in Liege, Belgium. Mileage is currently 182500. Bought off the original owner in August 2013, at 132000 miles - the cars been back to Liege twice, also Brussels, Luxembourg, Zurich and Paris (twice)!!!

Never had cars that I trust as entirely as these.

Lee.

Just for the record - I have over the weekend changed both the drop links and the suspension arms (with judicious marking and re-aligning of the adjusting washers) and - when I drove the car for the first time thought I may have gone deaf!

All the banging at the rear has now been cleared up - one very happy person :)

Onto the next job now!
