Dead battery and steering making clunking noise.

Post by sgg »

Hi, I went to start my car yesterday (406 2.2 hdi 2002) and it wouldnt start, ignition lights came on, turned the key and it sounded like the battery didnt have enough in it. I went to the car this morning with a spare battery, this time I couldnt even open the doors with the fob, battery totally dead no lights nothing at all. I swapped the battery and it started first time. I went back to the car this evening and again it wouldnt start, ignition lights come on but not enough in the battery to start it. I hooked it up to a friends car with jump leads and it started first time, as I drove off I turned the steering wheel and there was a clunking sound and a burning smell, I only drove it down the road but whenever I turn the steering there is this clunking noise.

I only use the car on the weekends, prior to yesterday Ive had no problems starting it and no noises from the steering.

Any ideas for what it could be and the likley repairs cost would be greatly appreciated.
