Broken front spring

My bro's just rung - sounds like a front spring's snapped overnight on his X-reg 110 exec estate. Those familiar with the saga will probably recall he bought a replacement 2.2 exec estate back in September. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=22572
Not one to rush into things, he had not yet swapped over to the 2.2, mainly because he has yet to move the towbar from one to t'other. This change of vehicle is now somewhat more urgent.

I've never had a spring go on a 406, but have obviously heard of quite a few instances. Is it normally possible to move the car at all? I've heard in some cases the broken spring contacts the cv boot, or are there more dire consequences possible - he really only needs to move it a car length or two to get it clear of his driveway.

I'm guessing this won't be getting fixed - look out for the breakage thread.

When mine went I drove the car for 3 miles! (to get me to the 'recoverable' distance from home  ).

They all snap differently but I was kinda lucky I just had a smooth part of the spring 'just' rubbing on the tyre wall, oh and an instant 50mm drop in ride height on one corner

I drove mine off the drive to a point where the recovery truck could winch me up. Knackered the CV boot but no other damage.

Both fronts went on the estate within about 2 weeks of having it Eric!

Don't try and move the car, you'll just wreck the tyres (had to replace both fronts on the estate :( )

Thanks for the info gents. He's managed to get it clear of his drive, so there's somewhere to park the 2.2.

Anyone looking for a 3-legged 110 exec estate in otherwise good running order?
