Binding brakes

Post by rwb »

I was expecting to see more of a gap.

I can turn the disc by hand easily, but it won't continue to spin at all (I have no idea what is normal).

I also have an ongoing problem where the brake pedal is slow to come back up, and sticks down if you brake hard. There's no obvious place to try and get a bit of WD into the mechanism, and obviously I don't want to get WD on the disc.

*Unplug the conectors for the pad wear sensors, and give them a spray of wd40.
normaly its just a sighn of ingress when the light comes on dimly,

The disks shouid normaly turn freely how old are the pads?
they look fairly new from here, some makes of pads take a while to Bed-in.

Are the pads free in their slots and the sliders free?

Been on a couple of years.

Pads not moving freely sounds like a good hypothesis.
Had a good look but didn't touch anything because I'm a novice and I prefer to know what I'm trying to do before I start...
It looks like there's one bolt at the bottom inside, through a rubber gator, that releases the outer part of the caliper which swings upwards to get into the pads. Is it true that the bolt must be replaced with a new bolt?

You don't always need to replace the bolt, ideally put some locktite on the threads, but it's more important that it's tight.

I serviced a Honda Civic yesterday with year old pads that had seized solid in their slots, took them out....they had to be knocked out with a chisel they were that tight...filed down the edges where they fit into their slots, cleaned up the surface of the pad with 80 grade paper, greased up the sliders and pad edges and refitted the pads....all is well now!
