as titled, ive had the top mount bearing replaced, it failed within 3 weeks & had it replaced with a new one, skf one this time. also had the rubber bush done at the same time, im getting a clonking again from the same side, felt the bearing under the arch & it feels slightly clonky again, apart from the bearing being knackered is it possible to get very similar symptoms but a different problem? could it be a wishbone or something possibly? it doesnt clonk on every turn & sometimes does it when reversing then braking with the wheels turned, cheers lee

Clonking may be anti roll bar drop links or mountings.
When my strut top bearings failed the steering had tightened up imperceptibly over a long period. The noise I got was from the spings twisting because they couldn't rotate easily at the top. When the strain became great enough, the tops of the springs jumped to a new postion, making a 'boing' as they did so. Steering was very noticeably lighter after the change.

had a look under the car yesterday & found it was the drop link catching on the shock, i undid the bolt on the bottom of the shock & turned it inward towards the engine, the noise has now gone, the bolt on the top of the drop link was only a few mm from the tyre & could of caused major issues if it had been causing wear to the tyre.

There's supposed to be a lump on the back of the shock that fits into the groove on the hub so it can't be in the wrong way, is the shock fully in the hub?

cheers, i took everything off on sunday, undid the torx bolts on the top of the shock but couldnt get the shock out of the hub, it turned both directions but came to a stop at the position its in now, theres no locating lug on the shock what i could see, i might have another go at some point to see if i can get the shock from the hub, if you look at the droplink mount on the left hand side shock it sits closer to the wheel than the drivers side, i dont know if this is normal or not, drivers side is about 30mm from the tyre, passenger side is about 12mm, cheers lee

The lug at the bottom of the shock absorber is more like a nipple, and a very small one at that. I suspect that it almost fits exactly into the gap in the hub
I could imagine that if the pinch bolt is removed from the hub and the gap enlargened then it might be possible to rotate the shock in the hub by almost 360 degrees

thanks to those who replied, after a couple of rushed attempts during lunch breaks i couldnt get the shock from the hub, had another go at it today, finally got the bast88d sorted, ended up using a pair of stilsons & kept turning clockwise, felt a little ping and now i have a shock that sits where its supposed to, it was putting extra stress on the drop link, just need to get alignment done, seems the little blob on the shock was in the wrong place in the hub which stopped it being removed, all sorted now, thanks again, lee
