Rear pin ball joint

Post by grasmere59 »

Has anyone replaced the rear lower "pin ball" joint? Mine had slight play when the car was MOT'd this afternoon and was wondering how difficult they were to do. :?

I'm guessing a bit here that yours is a d9 saloon, there appears to be a couple of different ones depending on build date, which bit is it???

i'm guessing number 7 ??

I've a D8 with the same problem, plenty of negative camber and slop in the corners

Ended up getting a decent set of hubs instead, the bushes look a right arse to fit in situ!

You could always try freezing the bush to get it to sit in easier....

A sh*t of a job indeed! There is a tool available specifically for this job (Sealy I think) that supposedly allows you to remove the bush with the hub in situ. I haven't tried one personally. The only other alternative is to remove the hub assembly, which means removing drop links, top links and brake pipes. Most likely you will struggle with one or all of the above on an older car. I managed to change the bush with a vice, a blow torch, hacksaw blade and large hammer. However in retrospect I would just have taken the thing to a garage and had them press out the old one and fit the new one for a tenner. You should replace suspension components in pairs, and you will need wheel alignment done after fitting the new parts, so consider replacing other items if you have the hubs off.
