Right hand side is alright to leave the shaft on, passenger's side is much easier done by removing the shaft from the gearbox, you just need to drain the gearbox oil.....you'll keep popping it out of the gearbox anyway, so it's easier with it removed.

Right hand side....

Undo the big nut (35mm socket) and bottom ball joint, split the ball joint and pull the shaft out of the hub.

Cut off the old rubber boot then whack the CV joint with a good size hammer and knock it off (you don't have to be careful not damaging the CV joint because you are fitting a new one.)

Clean up the shaft, fit the new rubber and a new clip....before you fit the new clip squash the open ends in a bit to make a better circle...makes it easier to knock the new joint on.

Locate the CV joint on the splines and gently tap the new joint onto the shaft with a wood block over the screw threads or use a copper or plastic hammer.....if it isn't going on easy use a very small screwdriver to push in the open ends of the circlip in whilst you tap the new joint on. (Hence squashing the open ends in first)

Left side is exactly the same except you remove the whole shaft (very easy to remove) and fit the new CV joint on the floor or in a vice if you have one.

Make sure you give the new joint a good greasing with the CV joint grease and work it in well before finally fastening the rubber boot on properly.

Fit the shaft back in the hub and fit the ball joint, fit the nut and tighten everything up.

Fit new gearbox oil.

Just thinking that sounds like the perfect time to fit a new bottom engine mount to me.

Would be the ideal time if the right hand driveshaft is being removed!

Ideally you should change the oil seal, but if you are careful removing the driveshaft and refitting it you should be fine without changing the seal.

Support the driveshaft at the gearbox end when you remove it so that it comes straight out and back in nice and smooth.
