rear brake caliper how does it work?

my rear brakes are very poor the piston in the caliper seams to be free and slides in out with just a little pressure needed to push it back in.the pad on the piston side is quite thick while the one on the other side is worn down a lot.so bought some new pads to fit and i cant get the pad in the side that is worn down,so thinking that the caliper was a sliding type i took it off to strip it down and free it off.but now ive got it off i see that its a one piece item so how does it work? as i can not get the thin side to open out to insert a new pad
whats likely to be sticking? do you think they might need bleeding?[fluid is clean and brake system hasnt been touched]
its a d8 model

I just re-furbished a rear caliper a couple of days ago so i can help you here . It sounds like the sliders could be seized . Inside the 2 little rubber boots theres a metal piece that slides in and out of the caliper body. One is a smaller boot (guide pin bolt goes through it). The larger slider/boot has the bolt that goes into the hub if that makes sense. The caliper is called teves if i remember rightly. If its seized which they usually are after a while it won't move. The smaller one is easy to get out i usually use a screwdriver or small drift to push the metal guide pin out. Then its just a case of cleaning it up use some wd40 and a small wire brush then use copaslip i usaully use a small syringe to pump the copaslip into the boot then get the boot back on the guide pin if you do it another way it can end up being very messy the copaslip usually ends up where you don't want it to go.
The larger slider/boot is a bit more tricky to do i suspect this is the one thats seized as i've had the same problem in the past with the pad on the piston ok and the outside pad worn down badly. Its a pain in the arse to do as those little rubber boots are very flimsy and can tear easily. My caliper had ripped boots so i just went to the breakers and got one for about £15. Cleaned it all up and haven't had any trouble since. With the large slider its best to get some wd40 inside the boot and let it soak in for a while then you should be able to free it off clean it all up and then put some copaslip inside the boot and work it in. Once its done should slide nicely.I believe the rear calipers on the d8 & d9 are the same Does your caliper look like one of these ones on ebay?

One other thing to bear in mind is those pins that go through the pads and caliper need to be as clean as possible i use some emery paper and clean them so they are nice and shiny again. When you put the whole lot back together use copaslip on the backs of the pads. If the caliper piston pushes back easily then thats ok. If you get stuck post again. If you do a search on here steve earwig had a post with some pics of caliper sliders and lots of copaslip......

I was checking the rear brakes at the weekend and i found that the o/s caliper wouldn't slide and must be siezed on the sliders, bit crap really as when i bought it 6 months ago it had just had new rear discs and pads fitted so the mechanic that did it obviously never greased anything, got a pair of new calipers in the garage so weather permitting i'll fit them at the weekend.

right finally pulled my finger out today stripped both rear brakes apart fitted new calipers, new discs, newpads, new handbrake cable 5 hours later job done
i did look at getting a rebuild kit for my calipers but it was 30 pounds plus one of the nipples was seized so i got two rebuilt calipers for 80 pounds.
