the front drivers side suspension spring snapped last night and the rac bloke said the top suspension bearing had gone as well.....looking for quotes to day i got £30 for the suspension spring but £70 for the bearings as it comes in a mounting kit!!!!! is this normal to be charged so much or do i need a mounting kit as its gonna be a garage job anyway. i checked the n/s suspension and that looks in good order compared to the drivers side so i guess who had the owner before had that one replaced at some point :? .......i have a 1998 406 family estate 2.0l.....also when trying to check the back i couldn't see any springs or is the back on a different system.....gutted as it was a family holiday to yarmouth tomorrow thats had to be cancelled but still pleased it happend before we went and not doing 70mph down the A1!

I can't help you much on the price but just to put your mind at ease, this seems to always happen when the car is either stopped or just started moving off. Both of mine went just as I was pulling out of the drive (on separate occasions).

I've never heard of it happening at speed.

cheers puggy i thought thats all it was and even the bloke who quoted me the price couldnt understand why it was that much....found a 7 seater i can hire for £245 for the week so i might just go with that for now....by the time i pay to get the job done as well as how much they charge to move my holiday and the hotel i booked for brum then it wont be that much different in price so at least i can get job done when i want to and make sure they aint gonna b some other nasty supprises as i love me pug and dont wanna get rid!

Hi, mine just went yesterday on my front nearside. I just started to move, maybe one foot then this awefull bang and then a grinding noise. Jumped out to see the nearside leaning badly. When I got it jacked up its then I saw the spring had gone.
I was lucky that the garage came and got it. Unlucky that it cost £140 to do the spring and bearing. The mechanic said it all happened because the upper suspension bearing had gone.
This caused the spring not to turn with the suspension so it was locked at the top so it was like having a little spring in your hand and twisting it in opposite directions. The weakest part will break on the spring. I am going to get the other side done in a few weeks because sods law will come into force if I leave it. I am going away in 10 weeks so best do it now.
I dont know if there is any need to put oil onto the bearing or indeed if you can get to it to do that. Would of done it myself but my back is still not right and I need the car for things.
