HELP

Post by pclarejnr »

I am at my whits end and my wallet is all the lighter from this.

My 406 is handling terribly (you may want to pick up a brew, make sure the kids are safely locked up and that the oven, iron etc are not on!).. let me describe my conundrum Allow your mind to wander just a little... your driving down a nice A road Sun is shining the wind is in your hair (because the air-con needs topping up) Your mind is wandering maybe thinking about spending some time on the beach when you get home or fix that leaky slates (whatever tickles your fancy) your attention is drawn to a mosquito heading towards your windscreen... Now you have two options here you could either 1. ponder as to why the hell there's a mosquito in Britain or 2. How your going to correct the cars handling following the turbulence created by the little blood thief!!, if you choose the latter you could quite possibly save yourself from a nice couple of nights in you local hospital, HOWEVER if you used any part of your brain to even think as to why there would be a mosquito here, you almost certainly would have a disaster of epic proportions to deal with and lets face it Insurance paperwork is way to extensive under everyday predicaments.

Rite then now for the boring but quite serious side to my story..

The car is chewing the inside of the rear tyres leaving lots of tread on the outside (approx 1 pair every 8000mls)
It is handling really drastically
I have had this car at my local accident repair specialists who gave me a lazer report on the cambers and tracking etc (I will photocopy the report asap as its currently at the accountants) maybe someone on here understands what it says haha, they told me that the back camber was out but nonadjustable however I have replaced (Previous to this problem)the rear track arm and they have off centered washers :?
I also had the car at my local mot centre on the shaker and they couldnt find anything :|

I have changed the following on this car to no avail

Top Strut mounts
All bushes, Link bars and ball joints (Except anti roll bars)
Tyres (all round)

At this moment I can only think of two things 1. maybe the indespension has bowed somehow /------\ (too much weight in the boot or trailer I do carry weight but i don't believe it to be excessive) or that 2. the rear track arms do adjust the camber and that they are not set up correctly

The car has 180000 mls hopefully that's not an issue

Please Help and Sorry for the long winded

Regards

Pete

p.s I dont want to get rid as I really like the spec and everything else is perfect.

Option 2 - it is adjustable.

I've just been off looking for a diagram I once found on one of the French 406 forums, to no avail :( but there was a neat diagram which showed that it didn't just alter the tracking of the rear wheels, but also the camber. This is probably why your report is hard to understand.

Oh yes, you might want to find another repair shop.

Mine ate the tyre on the rear nearside a couple of months back
I also had had the horizontal links done on that same side, but at the time didn't know about the camber'd bolts
Adjusted mine, and all seems good at the mo

I'd say they need adjust as Steve suggests
1999 D8.5 HDi GLX - Sold :(

2007 Mondingo Zetec - I seek forgiveness :( Bring back my 406

I've just been outside to look, bearing in mind this car has been to many garages etc,

Now I took it around the roundabout as fast as the car could go and then limped it back home put it up on ramps and came across this, Now I know the links do adjust the camber I can hopefully replace this arm (Both sides) and then take it to a NEW  camber adjust place and.. well fingers crossed the kids are safe again

so I apologise for saying all the bushes we're changed because this bugger got passed me, although it feels solid it must move under pressure ( i hope)

Please confirm this could be my problem or i'll cry

Where would I be without 406oc

Thanks again for your help
