1998 d8 2,1
just come in and turned into the drive and the steering went all stiff.had a quick look and it appears that the left hand side of the rack is loose, not on the wheel but the whole rack seams to be moving any ideas?
theres no leeks that i can see and the fluid level is right

That sounds rather dodgy! There's some big bolts holding to the subframe, Captain Jack found his was loose a while back.

well had a look today and steve you where right :cheesy:
one of the long bolts was missing!!!
so whipped one off my spare car[petrol] and that also was not very tight but it didnt fit :frown: ,fitted in the hole but was about 1/2 a inch to long
so went to spare diesel car and that also was not very tight but now fitted with some lock tight.
now i replaced the rack about a year ago so cant blame anyone else but me  but as both my spare car also had loose bolts eg but socket on and with no effort they undid i would advice you all to check yours.
does anyone know if there is a torque setting for these? as im sure the rack is alloy so didnt do them to tight and hopefully the locktight will work.
but if anyone has a setting i will re do them.
cheers

It's probably in Heinz... 80nm, 59lbf ft (this is from the D9 Haynes but the D8 should be the same). I suppose if you've got any worries use thread lock.

Apologies for the zombie thread resurrection... can anyone let me know the part number for these bolts? I have a 1997 D8 2.1td Exec and one of them has just fallen out

I need to source parts 2, 3, 4, and 5 from the picture.

Thanks :)
